Residency proof

We went through Ercan airport on Monday on the way to UK. Passport control asked us if we had residency (it appears it does not link in/show on their systems). We had opted to have our residency on a piece of paper rather than in our passport. We had photocopied this. They said this was not acceptable we need to show original paper. Just a heads up for others.....they did let us through though.

I also have my residence permit on a separate piece of paper. I scanned the original copy and then printed that copy (in colour) out, laminated it for protection. I have been across to the South 3 times and through Ercan (return) and had no problems on producing such copy. My assumption was that if you had applied online then you would have had only a printed (colour) copy of such permit.

Sorry but I am confused - it don't take much when you get older! In my life I have travelled Worldwide and had a variety of different country stamps splashed across a number of Passports. Only once in the 70's did I ever have any problems when entering the Yemen with an Israel stamp in my passport, to say the Yemenis were not happy about it is an understatement but they let me in and out anyway.

So why do people not wish to have a residency stamp in their passports? What is the big problem there? When asked where they live do they just say Cyprus or UK or admit where they live - or do they come up with the old standby of "I could tell you but then I would have to kill you", it makes no sense to me at all.

Maybe it's because I am ex military/Civil Service so am used to having to explain things and stand my ground - just try being ex military or worse Civil Service and try visiting Russia, the amount of stamps you need defies all logic but "no stamp" means no entry!

Before you ask, I have never had the bit of white paper stamped, always had the stamp in my passports and always had the residency stamps in my passports as well - saves all the hassle of where I live!

I agree Waddo plus I just knew if we had it on a separate piece of paper it is something else to lose or forget. We have been across the border with it without an issue and if in future there is an issue then we will simply stop going across there. We chose to live here and are quite happy to have that shown in our passport.

I thought those scrappy bits of paper that we had 15 years ago went out of use man moons ago. Why should anyone want a bit of paper that would be so easy to lose and cause more trouble than its worth. We're the same as Chriswright03, if they don't want us down south then to hell with them, just won't go. Their loss, not mine.

No I was beginning to think I 'd missed something. Always had the stamps in passport. Never been to the south however but as I have no intention of going there I suppose it doesn't matter.

If you do your residency application online, then (as I understand it) you will not get your passport stamped.

That's how I understand it to be as well - my answer is I will carry on the old way and get my passport stamped for certain! OK, it will take me time but I live here and as I am retired my time is my own, however, I do understand the position of those who live here and work here - the choice remains I guess.
