My personal recommendation, especially if bypassing UK location blocking of things like BBC and ITV is one of the intended uses would be streamvia, com . They are not the cheapest by some considerable margin, currently the cheapest package they offer is 6.99 per month Sterling but none the less they are my personal recommendation and the service I use myself and have used now over many years.

Thanks for your replies.
I just looked at Nord, they are offering a 3 year deal for 2.68 a month, they reckon 70 percent off?

I think that they are The Allied Carpets of VPNs always got a sale lol. I use them and find them reliable, you can get on and watch BBC iPlayer and Netflix as whatever country you want and a lot cheaper than other companies. Only used Express apart from them so can only speak for those 2 companies

I use Express VPN which is very good. NORD come very close and do the job and would recommend them for value. You may also be able to get a further 50% of this - PM me.

I agree with Erol in respect of Streamvia.com. Have been using them for sometime and they have an excellent customer service. Yes they are a bit more expensive than some VPN's but Erol correct me if I am wrong with Streamvia as it is not a VPN as such there is no issue with drop in speed?

Can you download BBC iPlayer progs to watch later with any of these VPN's or only stream? As streaming is an issue for many...

I use SmartDNSproxy currently. BBC iPlayer downloads used to work seamlessly but of late the BBC keep blocking the spoofed IP addresses, which makes it a pain to download consistently...

Not had any problems downloading BBC with smartdnsproxy Groucho. I use Get iPlayer Automator though on a mac, rather than BBC downloader.
There is Get iPlayer for Windows, but I've not used that.

Not quite so simple I am afraid. There are two principle ways you can make something like the BBC work out of region. Traditional VPN and via 'DNS redirect'. Each has pros and cons. I have in past written a detailed explanation of the differences and ill try and dig out the link if anyone wants it. Many VPN providers offer both, as does streamvia.

The reason why I am happy to pay at the 'high end' for streamvia is their customer service. Not just as a user but also as an 'ISP' provider. No other VPN provider has ever contacted MM as an ISP that its customers are using and sought to work in tandem with us to help get issues resolved. Providers like Nord are just to 'big' to bother doing this. Streamvia are also very UK focused so prioritise responding to changes from the like of the BBC that break access very quickly. BBC access is not I would guess such a big priority for the larger global players like Nord. Finally streamvia are scrupulous in my experience about managing their capacity to ensure existing users are not impacted by new sign ups. When someone like the BBC introduce new measures to stop out of region access many VPN providers who do find an implement quick work round to the changes see such as opportunities to sign up new users from providers that have not found work rounds. Streamvia more often in such circumstances suspends new signups until the increase load they will cause can be managed in such a way as to not impact their existing users. These are the reasons why I as a 'user' am prepared to pay 'top dollar' for the service.

I have used and use get_iplayer on windows (personally without any user interface, just using typed commands) for at least a decade. it is not the most user friendly way of downloading BBC content but does have advantages over using the BBC's own bespoke downloading system. Still needs a VPN or DNS redirect service to work.

I pay £20.99 every half year for Streamvia , best by far!
Quick setup on your router and the vpn is constantly on for tv boxes (iPlayer etc) or radio, as said v good customer services too.

Thanks for that Erol. I have read your other explanation before which was what swung Streamvia for me. On the very odd occasion I have had an issue with Steamvia (always pilot error) they have sorted it very quickly even to the extent of messaging me some hours later to say ITV problems had been resolved by ITV and were back on line which was nothing to do with Streamvia.

They seem to have changed their pricing as I am still paying £4.99 a month but that is just for the DNS and not VPN which I believe is now included in the higher price.

Agree, not for the faint hearted and does need VPN/DNS service. Get iPlayer for mac is definitely more user friendly, but appreciate that most folk are Windows users on laptop/computer.

Do you get that price because you are paying for 6 months at a time?

Erol, do you know if this works with betfair exchange, I use smartsdns and this used to work fine, but for some reason it’s stopped working.

Well dns redirect would not but normal VPN should / might but can not say for sure. Maybe try asking them direct ?

It seems the range of VPN's they provide now has changed and I must admit I was not aware of how much the pricing has increased!
I've been with them for many years and have a UK and USA VPN option which does not seem to exist now.

Given that the BBC Television License is currently £154:50, all of the above appear to be a good deal!

Have you a fixed IP address, this was a problem for me until I got my ISP to give me a fixed address, since then no probs.

Nethouse SmartDNSProxy I discovered every time my PC went to sleep I had to reactivate my IP address at SmartDNS to get Iplayer downloading again. I solved it by paying for a fixed IP.

Just give Nethouse a ring, costs a few quid per year but they can do it over the phone, then just reactivate your new IP at DNS proxy and you're done.
