Quarantine if coming from Spain to UK starting midnight

Can see some unhappy people who went there for a cheeky week in the sun. However, they knew the risk of travelling.

Was for this very reason we stopped in England in the cloudy, wet and cool 15 degrees this summer! Couldn’t risk jeopardising returning to work.

My brother and his family did exactly that and are in Spain at the moment!

You could well be correct. Tui have just announced that they have cancelled all flights to Spain and the canaries.

I’ve just read that he is en route back to London via Barnard Castle where he will quickly go an eye test by driving a car 15 miles down the A1.

Love it!! They've just interviewed someone who made it with half an hour to spare (on furlough). What a shame, a few minutes later he could have had another two weeks holiday at home on furlough.

I am furloughed and we were informed that we were on holiday for one week then back on furlough for a week then on holiday for another week!
I officially go back to work on Wednesday.

Rather you than me then Brend. Living in the TRNC permanently we at least know where we are. Actually that's totally untrue because after 16 years we're still visitors!

Some employers, mine included, stipulated that if you travelled abroad and ended up missing time from work as a result, then this would be unpaid or comes from your own holiday entitlement.

I think that seems reasonable, whether that is correct, think only time will tell.

This has been taken from Lexology a legal firm.

Holidays and furlough

Will workers continue to accrue holiday allowance while they are furloughed?

Yes, because they remain employed. Employers could agree to reduce any enhanced contractual holiday (beyond the statutory minimum of 5.6 weeks per year) to reflect the fact that an employee has been on furlough, but employees will retain their right to annual leave under the Working Time Regulations.

Can people take their holiday allowance while furloughed?

The updated guidance is silent on holidays, but updated Acas guidance supports the view that furloughed employees should be able to request and take holiday in the usual way. Therefore, if employees have pre-booked holidays, they will be able to take them and employers need not allow rescheduling unless they would ordinarily have a right to reschedule. If employers would like to require employees to take holiday during furlough, they would need to give twice as much notice as the length of the holiday that they want employees to take (eg, 10 days' notice for five days' holiday) unless the contract states otherwise.

What about bank holidays during furlough?

There are four bank holidays during the furlough scheme period: 10 April 2020, 13 April 2020, 8 May 2020 and 25 May 2020. If employees have the right to take bank holidays off as holidays, this will apply during furlough unless the employer and employee agree otherwise.

What should employers pay staff who take holiday during furlough?

This is a complicated question on which advice should be sought. Frustratingly, the updated guidance does not confirm explicitly that employers can claim for holiday pay under the scheme, but holiday pay would likely count as a regular payment that employers must pay employees and should therefore be claimable. However, any top-ups paid to furloughed employees would not seem to be recoverable.

I was speaking to my brother in law who owns a company and has furloughed staff. It all sounds very complicated. A human resource nightmare. Glad I don’t own a company at the moment. Testing times indeed.

Not sure if I'm reading this lot right, but it does seem that the employees are coming out a whole lot better than employers.

Sadly, I think that you're right - Companies may have retained their staff, and the staff may have been saved from starvation etc, but if there isn't enough business to generate wages and pay other costs, then employers will have very few options available to minimise expenditure significantly apart from reducing staff levels - unless that nice Mr Sunak pulls another rabbit out of his hat!

I heard that as an incentive, if businesses keep staff on after being furloughed and have not let any staff go by January, the government will give these businesses owners a £1000 per staff that had been on furlough. I guess this would maybe delay some business owners from making staff redundant up until then, but what happens after is anyones guess.

Soner, after Mr Sunak has finished playing Magician yet again, then yet again, there will be millions/billions added on to an already creaking, not to say bursting tax dilemma. Future British Tax Payers are not going to know what's hit them. Perhaps then, the business of funding China etc will stop?

It’s the a Job Retention Bonus, when it was first introduced, the initial response was that not many businesses were interested,

My daughter has been on furlough since the beg of March HR told her last week it will carry on until October.

From September, alongside NI and Pension contributions, employers will also begin paying 10% of furloughed employees wages.

From October the employer will have to start paying 20% of furloughed employees wages.

I sincerely hope your daughter has had a discussion with her employer about the Covid impact and how employment law can change at any time. Along with the terms and conditions of her contract. Once the employer starts having to pay something it could change the outcome. Sorry to sound pessimistic.

Have to agree with Dalartokat on this one. It seems to me there is a awful lot of misunderstanding regarding employees on furlough. I have a daughter who volunteers with CAB in UK and is continually having to update herself on the facts. There is so much misunderstanding by employees.

It’s a pretty simple sum. Revenue less expenditure. If it’s a plus you’ve made a profit if it’s a zero you are hanging on and keeping your head above water if it’s a minus you are in trouble.
Most companies have lost 4 months revenue so back of fag packet calculations tell you that’s a third of their yearly revenue. For tourism which is seasonal it will be much higher. I would imagine that next year you can safely estimate that companies revenue will still be a long way down on last year. Everyone is suffering and companies that cater to non essentials such as holidays and restaurants will be hit hardest. A lot of people will be keeping their cars for an extra year or two etc etc. The only way to cut back on the minus is to cut expenses. You can’t cut on rent, rates etc so the easiest cut is wages which for most companies is their biggest expenditure.
I think the UK is going to see unemployment which will make the early Thatcher years look great.
