Depends, of course. We sleep with a rotating fan at the end of the bed on all night. We assume that that is cheaper than leaving aircon on all night, as our units are old fashioned, installed in 2006. More modern units will be much more efficient. With a bit of luck someone will know the answer for you.

A fan uses just a tiny fraction of the electricity that an Aircon uses to actually cool a room, although most aircons will have a 'fan only' mode, which of course also uses only a very small amount of electricity.

Well, previously we worked out that my 1100W Aircon unit would consume just under 20p an hour of electricity at peak rates.
Typically a stand up fan might be rated at around 5OW and will therefore consume less than 1p of electricity per hour at peak rates.

What temperature have you got the aircon set at?

Good grief Soner and you're a local!! Mind you, the locals do seem to be moaning more about the heat than the "visitors" I've met lately.

You are not alone Soner. I can't sleep at the moment without AC on, think mine is set at 26C and I have the ceiling fan on too. I have stopped using the fan at the foot of the bed though when using the AC.

Trying hard not to use AC during the day, but when I've had to, have been using it on the dry setting, which is working well to make it a bit more comfortable, and I believe it's cheaper to run on dry mode.
Tried to sleep on dry setting, but failed miserably, so it's in cool mode in the bedroom.

Virtually never use A/c at all, the air feels so artificial and then when you have to go outside, the heat is unbearable. Have just learned to adapt after 16 years here.

If you have a fan going as well (preferably a ceiling fan directly above you), then you should be able to cope with the A/C set at 27 degrees, and the A/C fan speed set to auto/variable - if the A/C fan speed is set too low, I think that it might force the compressor to work harder, increasing the cost!

The separate fan will cool you (but not the room) by causing evaporation from your skin, my distant memories of schoolboy physics suggests that the phrase 'latent heat of evaporation' is to be thanked for this phenomenon! :) :)

Surely isn't the point of the exercise for the body to feel cool, so the fan fits the bill for those that require it.

We run inverter AC @ 22C dry mode on timer for one hour whilst we go to sleep. Plus end of bed fan which runs all night on
No1 setting

Yes, you're right, but the exercise does require air that is appreciably cooler than the body which is to be cooled.

Evaporation (and thus cooling) is proportional to (amongst a host of other things!) the temperature difference between the body to be cooled and the surrounding air temperature, and the rate of flow (speed) of the air past that body.

It follows, therefore, that cooling the air (with an a/c unit, say) will greatly assist the action of the fan in situations where the ambient air temperature is so high that the difference in temperature between the body and the surrounding air is minimal.

You don't actually need to cool the room and all of the air in it to a comfortable temperature, just reduce the temperature of the air enough for the fan to do its job!

Well, that's my theory, anyway :)

We replaced our old aircon units with inverters about three years ago.
These are much cheaper to run and more efficient. We run the bedroom one at 25 degrees before we go to bed, then if one of us waked up or gets up in the night we run it again for five minutes. This keeps us cool enough at the moment. We do have a ceiling fan too, but find it too noisy.

Our house has ceiling fans and a/c installed in all habitable rooms. The a/c units are not the inventor types though.
The fans use about 50 w/hour so at normal electricity rates would cost 1 lira per 20 hours. A/C use 1 kw/hour in the bedrooms, = 1 lira per hour and the living room one uses 3 kw/hour which = costs 3 lira per hour. The A/Cs are using 20 times more power, if you have an inverter type then 10 times more.

We do use the A/Cs when the humidity is really high or to cool the rooms before going to bed. I prefer the fan only most times
because if it is used with the windows open, fresh air is coming in and the outside air temperature drops during the night. A/C units only circulate the air, certainly don’t work well with windows open, and I find the compressor cycles on and off during the night which keeps waking me up.

We only put the aircon on during the hottest part of the day for the dogs - I know, soft aren't we.

Been trying to persuade ours to go in the pool - they'll go down the steps up to their knees, and that's it!

Thank goodness, our five don't go in the water. Thought of having them in the house shaking water off all over the place - ugh. Mind you they all love to drink the pool dry.

The vet says "Don't let them drink the pool water, it's bad for them" - and I think "You know nothing at all about cats and dogs, if you think that they'll take any notice of me!"

After living here for 16+years I have (and to a lesser degree my husband) got used to hot summers and if Meteo guys are correct they will get hotter. What I do is what the locals do a lot i.e. I open windows wide, close all the Venetian type shutters, thereby keeping direct sun out of the house, but allowing any breeze in, which is then circulated by fans. When they don't have shutters they seem to keep their curtains closed all day. The other thing we do is walk around the house so slowly we're nearly in reverse and wear as much natural fibre clothing a possible. Most of the dogs are not too bothered either and certainly not distressed in any way but even my TC hairdresser is moaning this year, even though she is born and bred here. "just because I was born here, doesn't mean I have to like it"!! Ps: I never go out without a hat and keep a brolly in car to kep sun off if I'm going to have to walk around in Girne.
