The pitiful prospects of Greek Cyprus

I spotted this on Facebook, it had been reposted by our old friend İsmet Üstüner (AKA 'Elko'), so I'm sure that he won't mind my posting it here: -

THE PITIFUL PROSPECTS OF GREEK CYPRUS
The chickens are coming home to roost…Greek Cyprus is finally paying for its maximalist demands of “I want it All.” More than half a century later, the signs are clear in all directions that their OXI policy of “Long Struggle” has pushed them into a dead-end.
Maraş/Varosha is about to open under Turkish administration.
Turkish troops in Cyprus are staying.
Hydrocarbons are at the bottom of the ocean and will stay there until Turkish Cyprus gets its fair share.
Tourism revenues are 90% down as the Pandemic rages on.
Their latest slap-on-the-face is that they are being left out of the German-led Greek-Turkish dialogue.
On the diplomatic front, the scoresheet is as gloomy as it can get. First, the GC leadership has frustrated all the UN efforts to reach a fair settlement on the island. One UN Special Representative after another have fallen victim to impossible demands, finally exploding at Crans Montana in 2017 when Greek arrogance reached a new high: “Zero Turkish troops, zero guarantees, no power-sharing in Cyprus.”
Now the EU is at the limit of Greek maximalist arrogance. Except for the adventurist Macron, European leaders are saying to Athens: “If you want peace with the Turks, negotiate.” The Greek ploy of maximum punitive sanctions on Turkey will get nowhere.
Greek Cyprus are seeking friends wherever they can find them: Egypt’s Sisi, Israel’s Netanyahu have their problems at home.
Macron, whose troops are stuck in the sands of the Sahel, is playing neo-imperialist games in Libya, going against the UN, supporting the Warlord Haftar. In crisis-laden Lebanon, he sought and failed to launch a new French Mandate. He is now leading the poor Greeks of Cyprus down the garden path.
Chancellor Merkel has put Macron in his place. For now, the EU will follow a “de-escalation policy” to push through a dialogue between Athens and Ankara. Greek Cyprus can only watch as this process unfolds. In desperation, GC leadership started now selling EU Passports, for gain...yet, they live off handouts from the EU.
With a new gas discovery in the Black Sea, Ankara is clearly in the driver’s seat. Turkish continental shelf is East Med is safe from Greeks’ designs.

I think both communities on the island are similar in one respect: greed.

I don't know much about politics and I mean no offense to anyone but I think living on the other side of the island is harder for an average person, if you're not wealthy. I browse Greek employment pages on facebook out of pure curiosity. The average wages are like 400-600 euros, and the rent for an average apartment is like >€700. House sale prices are >€100.000. Impossible even to make a living, let alone buy a property.

Well, I think this side is slightly better in that respect, but I still get the feeling that the wealthy is taking advantage of the people who are in need. I have a friend at a construction company and he says they pay black unskilled workers only TL 90. Per day. And they don't let them rest from 13:00 to 15:00! His company makes 200%-300% profit (friend is only an employee, he wouldn't do that).

The are many posts by people who are in their mainlands and asking for if there's any jobs on the island (greek and turkish facebook employment pages). Those who are already on the island unanimously reply "DON'T COME".

Yesterday, another friend told me that this island was a place for people with no worries. So true.

Aaanyway, I know I am off-topic, but had to get this off my chest. And regarding the topic, even if they find natural gas or whatever resource, I don't think it will benefit anyone other than the wealthy.

For my fourpence worth I agree Keith don't see much in the way of 'false news' in that appraisal !! IMHO
