Warranty What is That?
Recently I purchased two (2) as then described by the DIY store owner as being top quality German shower heads (460TL each). I Installed them and one of the shower heads lasted just two (2) weeks when the monsoon shower head burst. I Took it back to the store to require about Warranty or exchange.
Where upon I was told; this is the TRNC we don’t give Warranty, try repairing it yourself.
Three weeks ago I purchased from a different DIY store an Expansion Tank for the domestic pump. That tank lasted until last night when that too burst at the rim spraying water everywhere flooding the pump room. Now unawares that it had burst it totally emptied our domestic water tank. I took the burst Expansion Tank back to the store ware purchased, again to ask about Warranty and again told; sorry we don’t give Warranty or exchange. Out of necessity I purchased another Expansion Tank.
Now my point for writing this post is. Recently a Forum subscriber posted that he longed for the border to be reopened so he could shop on the South, and was then chastised for his comments by other subscribers saying that he should “support local businesses” here in the North. Well I too long to be able to spend my money to purchase goods on the South side where goods are cheaper, more available and more importantly Warranty is given.
Support local businesses!! Why should we when this is the way they treat their customers. That catch phrase “This is Cyprus” is waring a bit thin.
I can not wait for the borders to be reopened to be able to shop on the South side and be treated like my custom means something.

Re: Warranty What is That?
I seriously think it does depends upon where you buy items. However, when I buy ANYTHING ABOVE 200TL I demand a "proper" receipt and the date that I purchased the item. If I'm questioned as to "why" then I tell them if anything goes wrong I will expect a replacement. If I'm told they don't do KDV receipts then I go elsewhere. There are DIY and electrical stores on every corner (unlike years ago) and many now issue proper KDV which prove when and how long you bought your items. Walk with your feet and ignore the riff raff.
There was a thread a couple of weeks ago on the "This is Cyprus" bull----t. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE ANY LONGER. The more the locals (some of whom come on this forum and defend the phrase) accept this fact, then the TRNC will be a happier place to live. Mind you all is not perfect on the other side, I bought a mobile phone in 2018 from one of the largest stores down South and within a couple of days it clearly had a unrepairable fault. After 3 months I gave up the ghost and was tired of arguing.

I understood from previous historical posts on this subject there is, in the TRNC, a government department which deals with consumer complaints regarding defective goods and the legal route you may pursue.

Re: Warranty What is That?
I made the comment 'support local businesses' but I would never go back to a company that cheated me on a warranty.
If you don't know whether a company can be trusted, ask for recommendations before purchasing! We're always happy to recommend the good guys...
On the West side, Ersem Yapı Market for all of your diy, plumbing etc, and Domart & Blomberg for electrical.
There are others of course, but that's who I use.

Yes I was In Coban once & a lady - much to her surprise & pleasure - was given a new pump as the one she had was not working properly
Companies like this deserve support unlike others not too far away towards Kyrenia that I could mention!

Re: Warranty What is That?
About 9 years back I purchased from Ermantas 3 large bathroom mirrors, approx £65 each. I left TRNC and return many times, but around 2 years later on my visit all 3 were in pieces on the floor, they had detached from the base as the glue used could not withstand the Cyprus heat. I took one of the mirror fittings back to Ermantas in Lefkosa, and asked if they had different mirrors but with similar holes on back (to save me re-drilling holes in the tiles to hang them). I was asked why, and I explained what had happened. Unexpectedly, because "This is Cyprus", all three were replaced with out any charge. So, there are good companies out here, offering good customer service.

I agree, we had a problem with a water machine, the ones with the large bottle at the bottom and pumped up. Purchased from Blomberg in Karaoğlanoğlu 4 years ago! The pump was faulty so I popped it in to see if they could repair it at a cost. They called a couple of days later all fixed and free of charge!

This morning I have been to the Karcher shop in Lefkosa because my new window vac ran out of steam really quickly before I had cleaned even half my windows.
They are going to give me a new one in a few days when they come back into stock & were most upset that I insisted on buying a small one to keep me going in the meantime!

Yes “sophie”, totally agree with you, as in all walks of life we have good and bad uns. And rightfully some of the good ones have been named in the posts above, and yes I know it’s the Forums policy not to name the bad ones. I believe that should be changed, it’s not good enough for the individual to talk with his feet, one individual walking out doesn’t bother the trader. But if that business was “named & shamed” and the drop in his trade noticed due being named. Things just might change for the good of the customers.
Thanks to all the other Forum members for their post, they made for interesting reading. And the good trades names were duly noted for further reference.

Re: Warranty What is That?
I totally agree dap2410 but sadly its a No, No here to publicly malign or criticise a business or restaurant or individual. A law came into force and I'm sure Soner or KC will be able to provide a link to it. By criticising a business it is possible to affect profitability and we can't do that. If you go back on to the earlier Restaurants section of this forum you will see plenty of pros and cons. Have just very quickly scanned through the Restaurant section and it looks as if people have stopped criticising. There used to be some absolute lu lu's .

These days, rather than outright criticism and condemnation, I tend towards the tack that Mrs Thatcher used when she was asked for her opinion on Punk Rock...
" 'Ere missis Fatcher, watcher fink ov Punk Rock then?"
She replied - and you'll just have to do your best to imagine her 'Received Pronunciation' and measured delivery -
"I find it.............. Not quite to my taste"

Good one KC, "not quite to my taste" sounds just ideal.
