Letter - malicious, cruel and totally untrue

Last Sunday a letter (as above) was hand delivered to the property of a lady in Lapta. The letter states that the people in the property have been seen beating a dog and taunting it for amusement and that "anonymous citizens" have reported this to KAR. It also says that an off duty policeman has seen someone kick the dog in the head and spit on it.

An addressed envelope was enclosed in the letter and a fine of 200tl was demanded to be delivered to the KAR offices by 10a.m. on 27th January 2013, the letter goes on to say that if the 200tl fine is not paid, the dog will be confiscated and a further fine of 1000tl will be charged.

The letter was signed by Joanne Smith - Head of Animal Abuse Control at KAR.

On behalf of KAR I would state the following:-

1. KAR is totally unaware of a Joanne Smith
2. KAR does not have an Animal Abuse Control Depaartment
3. KAR has no mandate to issue fines
4. The original letter is in the hands of the Police
5. If anyone else receives a similar letter purporting to come from KAR, please contact the office in confidence on 0533 869 40 98 or send a personal Email to myself.

I know this lady and she is devastated that anyone could be so cruel. She has only just come back here from the UK having lost her husband late last year, things are difficult enough for her without this. She doesn,t even have a dog, she did, but she paid for him to be transferred to England last year when she returned there due to her husbands ill health, the dog remains in England with her family.
It is beyond me what anyone can get out of putting a lovely lady of 70 plus years through this distress, I hope they are found out and dealt with severely by the police.

Is there even the remotest chance that this was a mistaken identity and that the person the letter writer wanted to terrify was someone else. It doesn't make the letter right in any way, but I am wondering if the address was wrong. As there is no Jacquie Smith at KAR who could have written such an erroneous letter, why one arth would they want to send to someone who doesn't even have a dog?

Marion, the name is Joanne Smith. Of course it could also be someone anti KAR. It does put them in a very bad light doesn't it? Hopefully this will be a one off.

sorry, wrong J. But it is totally impossible to get into the mind of someone who did that. Might it have been a teenager with nothing better to do? Why come up with the name of J smith (Joanne - jacquie is the writer!) - seem,s a bit juvenile. Just hope that the recipient of this unnecessary missive is O.K. and feels supported by others.

Oh dear, how sick and what a sad comment in the changes in behaviour in the TRNC over the last 8 years.

My congratulations to the lady for her common sense and courage in reporting promptly and sincere sympathies for her horribly ordeal.

There are several weird anomalies in the story, but it is probably better not to speculate as the Police may want to keep some details from the public arena.

However, there are other dog owners who are vulnerable as it appears this lady was, and are now feeling very nervous . I hope the culprit will be caught soon, and that KAR will ensure that their minds are set at rest by updating us on developments.
