update on pet registration please!
As promised , Marion, here is a report on visits to register dogs. iI hope the other people who kindlyposted and anyone else who is interested will find i since it moved.
The following applies to Ozankoy residents . Judging fom the above threads it may not apply in oher places, but I suspect is places that have a Muhtar but not a Belediye that have to use Girne.
1. No need to take the dogs. Last years "ads" were misleading.
2.. Visit Veterinary Dept. opposite hospital in Girne. Very small sign. Narrow driveway leads to a small and very muddy carpark at rear of
building. A gentleman who had been worriedly staring at a leaking tank, kindly guided me to the back door and through the building,I had taken the green cards from last year and was given two tablets (1 for one dog, half each for the others) and charged 10 TL per dog. When I asked what I did next he said "Belediye". When I asked where he went into a long discussion in Turkish.
Fortunately I managed to catch that they had decided I needed to go to the offices near the Wed. Bazar as previously
3 Go to offices on the left on the road leading to the Wed. market . Badly signed and difficult parking. Pleasant helpful lady, but virtually no English. If you have last years forms take them so she can copy them! Gave me a new "gold medal" for one of the dogs who had lost hers, but the others kept last year's tags and numbers.. 12 TL per dog (two females, one male, all neutered). Total 66 TL for the 3. A of money for a struggling pensioner who has done them a favour by taking dogs off he sreets... But last year it was 36TL for one unneutereddog alone, simply because she was too young for the operation at the time..
As far as I can work out the ony "impovement " (advertised by KAR) is that you now have to waste a whole morning going to two different places instead of one where you showed your dogs "passport" to show it had been wormed. Yet they trusted me to give the dogs of tabs, and took my word they had been neutered!
Sadly language problem prevented me from asking questioonsI wanted to. I am particularly puzzled by the following: I have of course been worming my dogs three monthly. Next session due in Mar. Should I keep these tabs (hoping I dont lose them!) and give them then? Are they generally the same thing? And they gave me two tabs - one for the larger dog and half for the tinies. But of the commercial variety the Vet recommended two for the larger dog and one each for the others. Can anyone set me straight please. I really cant afford more time and money on an unnecessary vist to the Vet

Re: update on pet registration please!
Thanks Rambling rose. I have started a new thread with this because i feel it wwould be EXTREMELY helpful for other KibKomers to record here their experiences with pet registration, and what it costs them.
it seems as if it differs tremendously from area to area and it seems confusing as to whatone must do and why, and also in many instances whether it is felt affordable.. as RR says, she has rescued dogs and it is costing her to keep them. What if they had been left in the street.
It would be very helpful to know the current experiences of others, and also what is the time frame for their areas. Maybe it is staggered over the year depending on geography.
and what do others find the cost to be. We had to tell our Muhtar that the cost of a neutered bitch was ????? as he did not know, and wanted to charge us for an unneutered female (a lot more).
And please would other moderators leave this in the main forum for a couple of days so that people will read and comment. thanks.

Thanks Marion. The only problem is we now have three threads on Dog Registration! Confusing! Any chance of reuniting them! Some people did in fact provide the info you are requesting on the first thread! (The one that is now under "Pets")

Re: update on pet registration please!
We're based in Alsancak hence we have a Beledye but still had to go to Girne (on Monday last) Registered all three dogs, as one had not been registered before I had to provide passport number!!! Two females (spayed and one male neautered) Cost 30tl for the three, including a worming tablet. (at least they buy a decent make now) The dogs are now registered with the Government!! Back to Alsancak Beledyer, up two flights of stairs and had to produce the green card to show I had been to Girne. They were then registered as living in Alsancak. Given a sheet of A4 paper to prove I'd been to both offices - cost 36tl for the 3 of them.
I specifically asked the lady in Girne (she spoke good English) why i had to register them with the Government as I regularly worm my dogs and the answer was .................. "It's the law and we have to ensure that all dogs who go out on the streets are protected from those dogs who are not wormed. It's for your dogs safety after all" When put like that, how can you argue? Its TRNC logic I guess.

Nice one Sophie. So we have to pay out to protect our own dogs because nothing is done about the dogs loose in the street that no one has to pay for. Real Cypriot illogic.
as to RR's request, I will pass that on to the expert. I was merely trying to keep the thread in the general forum, although if everyone did what I do, namely read View |new Posts, then things do not get lost and one merely goes to the various sections to find answers to their questions. But I am not sure where tolook for things sometimes, so rely on the New Posts, Unread Posts or Active topics.

Re: update on pet registration please!
And what about people who do not have transport? So again it would cost them a fortune to protect their own dog against dogs that they might never meet!
When this started it was just a trip to the muhtar who took the money gave a certificate and a disc. No worming tablet. But then onyear two he did not have the certificates and no further contact with the muhtar over this. The occasional noticein Turkish might appearon a lamp post, which seems to be ignored by most of the dog owners in the village - which are the dogs which roam around with no collars!!!!

We also live in Ozankoy and registered our dog on Tuesday this week. Went straight to office near Wednesday market, lady looked at booklet all up to date, paid 12Lira and that was it all done. No need at all to go elsewhere at all. It seems the dept near the hospital are just out to make more money issuing tablets that are not needed.

Re: update on pet registration please!
Poppy, the office opposite the hospital in Girne is the central Government Veterinary office for the district and I was sent there by Alsancak Beledyer who refused to register the dogs as living in Alsancak until they saw that the green booklet had been stamped by a Government official. Exactly the same happened last year and the year before. Up until then we had to stand in the hot sun outside the Alsancak depot where their vehicles are stored and 3 or 4 Government Vet blokes did the paperwork. You actually had to take the dogs as well in those days - it was bedlam. The whole thing is a con as far as I'm concerned but you can bet your life that the year I don't do it, the Alsancak office workers will call at the house (as they did 2 years ago) asking to see that the current Girne booklet was made up. I sent them to a house up the road where I knew there was a local and the answer I got was "he has never registered his dog with us, so there is no point". In other words if you never ever register, then they don't bother with you.

Re: update on pet registration please!
I am now totally confused. Should the dog be registered with the government as well as Girne? If so we have never in three years been told this and only done it with Girne who have never questioned this and as said the lady in the office there does speak good English so I would have suspected she would have sent us back to the government office if needed. Any thoughts on this anyone?

Re: update on pet registration please!
Confused isnt the word for it! Bewitched, bothered and bewilered even doesnt come close!
Seems I needn't have gone to the Veterinary Dept. and could have just used my own Vets passport, but if it hadnt turned out that way and I had to make two trips to Girne Beledye I wouldnt be resposible fo my words or actions!
Two things I think contribted to the confusion:
1. As I said in my earlier post on the other thread the worming tabls (not sure about the registration) was introduced by the European Union, who I think should bear some blame for not following through their initiative. It was at that point the tabs were doled at at points in the villages, for the benefit of those who hadnt transport. Particularly I think shepherds, but of course without enforcement they ignored it.
2. Further confusion was introduced when the Beledyere grabbed some of the functions of the Muhtars - dog registration was one of the victims.
I believe the Government just arent committed to this procedure - they are just reacting to pressure from the EU and KAR and just havent thought it through, but left it to individuals to sort out and they are as confused as we are!
Further points from the other thread: it seems Lapta have declared UDI - they seem to be more efficient than the rest and have a different system. Like one of the other posters on that thread I have Cypriot friends who are responsible , caring dog owners, and law abiding generally but when I asked their advice on dog registration I just got one of those typically Cypriot shrugs - too complicated, no time, our dog is regularly wormed by a vet we trust.
I was very tempted to ignore the whole thing - but I have this hope that if the worst came to the worst and one of my dogs got involved ina round up for a cull, the police would respect the official tag and spare its life.
Another silly - I was told the reason for insisiting on getting the tabs from the Veterinary Dept. was the Govt. didnt trust private vets - yet they not only trusted me to administer the tabs, but took my words to dogs had had the much more expensive operation!

Re: update on pet registration please!
I totally agree RR, the whole thing is a total mess. I say I have 3 dogs but I could have 103 for all they know. I have them operated on, but they don't know that, they just take my money, in the case of someone living in Alsancak it's taken twice, once with them and once with Girne. Plus it gives work to 4 people. Two in Alsancak, one to write the forms out and one to read it and sign. The same in Girne and plus, it keeps the sales of carbon paper at an all time high. The TRNC must lead the world in sales of carbon paper!!

Re: update on pet registration please!
I live in Catalkoy, a friend and I who previously had her dog registered and myself a newbie with 2 dogs ( 1 female and 1 male) went to register them this morning
We went to the Vet hospital and paid 10TL each dog, I produced my vet cards showing that both my dogs had been recently wormed, but it didnt make any difference. I was given green cards with the details of the dog written on it.
We then went to Catalkoy to the beledye, he took the green cards that I recieved from the vet hospital and entered the details onto another card, he asked if they had operation, I said yes, (and they have,) but he didnt ask for any proof, he then stamped the card with the Beledye Stamp, we then went to the cashiers office across the road and paid 12TL for each dog.
I asked at each stops for a tag and each time we were met with a shrug and a shake of the head.
We went at 10.00 and we were back home at 11.00 no hassle whatsoever.

Re: update on pet registration please!
I don't know what happens this year, but to the best of my knowledge for the last 3 years Esenteppe have been the only place that issued little tags with reg number on it, which you then attach to the dog collar. This is supposed to be mandatory so that if your dog is lost, making a nuisance of itself, barking continually at night or whatever and someone complains to the Beledyer, they can check whether it is wormed and registered. They are then supposed to contact the owner, rather than do what they have been known to do.

Re: update on pet registration please!
sophie: The Girne Belediye have issued the little "gold "tags for several years and did this year. The only difference this year was that - sensibly -the dogs kept the same tag and reg no. Perhaps they are running out of "gold" tags! But there were no objections to providing a new tag for the dog who had lost hers. They are awkward things anyway as the hole is too small to fit on the rings on most collars easily
