With the approval of the government, Büyükkonuk Municipality have rented out the Büyükkonuk motel/site, which is about 10 miles to the north of Boğaz, to the Özok Group, who amongst other things sell Vestel products in the north.
There is concern particularly from schools in the Mağusa area that they will no longer be able to use the picnic area as many have done in the past for their annual school barbeques.

Although they are charming to look at, you can see, from the photos below, that in 49 years' time, the wooden chalets will probably be gone. My TC in-laws commented by saying that at least Özok are a TC company.

Re: Büyükkonuk "Country Resort" rented out on a 49-year leas
I stayed there when it first opened, before the new road cut it off from the village. It really was lovely. I also went up there to eat with fdriends. It was then part of the municipality. Does this mean that it was not a viable proposition. so what on earth can the new lessees do to make it more viable? Guess there is no answer to that, but I do hope they continue to offer the facilities to children. Right next door is the village football pitch as well, so I expect that will continue tobe used.
As they say 'watch this space'. Maybe they intend to renew the huts. If it turns out to become more popular then fine. They really are superb huts;' and very comfortable and it is a beautiful, peaceful spot.
