Basic manners and respect !!

Born during WW2 in an Irish family with 5 siblings I was brought up respect others, particularly the senior citizens and those in authority. The world has of course changed and I have been extremely disappointed with the lack of 'please and thank you' that seems to disappeared from our latest generations. I have been extremely impressed with the huge respect that that the young have for the older generation here in the TRNC. I live among almost no UK ex-pats and have been so happy to have been accepted and speak to everyone!! Today I was really quite shocked when a young lady (well actually not a lady) walked towards my property, probably in her 20's ...as she approached I said'hello' ..blanked !! As she continued level with my entrance gate I said good morning in Turkish...totally blanked again. Silly old fool that I am really upset me as I've never come across this before. What is happening to the world, I blame it on the media and the very antagonistic attitude that is prevailing just now !!

I say good morning and hello to everyone I see on the streets of Geçitkale, even if I do not know them. Would not do that in London.

Soner, In London and the big cities there is a very different situation but in villages and smaller communities people are generally friendlier. No one expects people to be 'all over you' when you speak but surely to be deliberately 'blanked' is poor manners??

Speak to the person next to you on the Tube and you get the "are you an axe murderer" look!
Some are wise and some otherwise.....

Northerners are the worse.

They don't bloody stop with the friendly chat to pure strangers. What's wrong with them? Makes us Londoners very jumpy and suspicious.

:) :) :)

I'm probably a prime example of that - if I get into a lift on the 3rd floor and there's someone in it, odds are that I'll have arranged to go for a drink with them before we get to the Ground floor ;)

Maybe she had her air pods in her ears and didn't hear you.
Maybe she was deaf.
Maybe she was emotionally upset and craving solitude.
Life isn't always black and white. You tried and maybe she was rude but perhaps possibly maybe she was not.
Just a touught...

Totally agree panchocat, it is never a good idea to pass hasty judgement when you may not have the full picture. There could be many reasons for her behaviour don’t think it is something to get upset about.

Think around 5% of the population is deaf or near enough. Not sure if there are any stats on rudeness but I'm thinking higher.

Some people are deaf......then again some are rude.....or unable to understand English/Turkish and the only way they can cope is by ignoring the situation. My advice would be to keep smiling.......it uses far less muscle energy than frowning (8))

Never seen the thrifty from Yorkshire bit tbh.
It's like the Scottish meanness. Some of the most generous people I've met have been Scottish.
They can drive you mad with the over the top Scottish patriotism singing I'll never ever leave the bonnie banks of Scotland while in their local in Finchley but I've never met a mean one.
Somehow the Welsh get a free pass whereas in my experience the are generally tighter than two coats of paint. No offence.

Yeah but that's bosses that's always like getting sh!t out of a rocking horse in my experience.
When being interviewed for a job and they said we'll start you on X and in 6 months we'll double your pay my standard line was great I'll start in 6 months.

I think we should introduce ourselves to each other like dogs do - the world would be a far better place.

Couple of weeks ago I went in the coffee/cafe section of Mr Pound. The guy behind the counter said "we like serving you because you say, please and thank you" Made my day, but saddened it at the same time.

I've lost count of the times in a shop where the customer in front doesn't say please or thank you and yes I do know the Turkish words. You might not be in a position to leave a decent tip or buy a lot but basic curtesy costs nothing
