Need to pay a cheque into Bank Account
We have received a tax refund cheque from HMRC made out in my husbands name. It was posted in UK on 6th October and received in our local PO box last week. Credit West refuses to allow us to pay it into a Sterling deposit account. As the cheque is only valid for 6 months and we are concerned about posting it back to UK for family to pay it into our UK bank, under the present circumstances, especially having seen the mountains of unsorted mail in the UK, can anyone advise me. Are there any banks that might accept an HMRC cheque? BTW we have checked with DHL but even that has complications. We had the identical problem last year, but as there were people going back and forth to UK, we solved the problem.

I contacted HMRC by phone and explained the situation.
They paid directly into my UK account .
Gave details over the phone.
Hope this helps.

That's great if it works. Have found it difficult to speak to the right people and a bit of a run around, but will have another go. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of UK banks will deposit cheques by taking a photo from there banking APP if it's under £500

Go onto the official UK tax department web site and ask the question there.
Put the cursor just under the e mail address on the e mail, this gives you the true address that the e mail is coming from.

Many UK Online banking apps. Allow you to photograph the cheque. Then upload to the app. Can be be done from anywhere in the world

I received a rebate from HMRC, scanned it into my Lloyds app - a little bit fiddly but eventually did it. You have to scan both back and front even if nothing on the back of the cheque. No problem. I down loaded the app from here. Hope that helps.

13roman58, to avoid the phone run around I had last year, can you remember if you phoned the number on the top of the sheet attached to the actual cheque i.e. 0300 200 3300. Thanks Trying hard not to have to post it back. Things are bad enough here, but the PO in UK appears to be in dire straights with regarding to delayed mail.

Sophie, If you end up having to post it back don’t do it until at least 3rd or 4th week in January. Royal Mail have suspended parcels and letters in and out of Europe, Canada and Turkey due to suspension of flights and shipping due to the new border controls imposed on Britain. In U.K. it’s scrapped it’s Special Delivery Guarantee to get peoples post in time for Xmas Eve.sophie wrote: ↑Tue 22 Dec 2020 1:17 pm13roman58, to avoid the phone run around I had last year, can you remember if you phoned the number on the top of the sheet attached to the actual cheque i.e. 0300 200 3300.
