Re: uk pension
I tried 6 weeks ago and was told they would not do it over the phone the only way was a Government gatway which is no good here as the gateway access is sent and the access code is sent via another letter and by the time it gets here the number has expired.
The only way I could do it was to download the application form, about 60 pages fill it in and I was lucky enough to find someone flying back to the UK. Remember to send it to the Wolverhampton address not Newcastle.

Re: uk pension
My husband managed to claim his pension by phone in June. He had collected all the documents ready to send off but was concerned about sending it via post from here in middle of lockdown so he called them and it was all done over the phone(Skype) - this number +44 (0) 191 218 7777. Is it worth calling and explaining your situation Hammerhead?

Hammerhead, did you try using a UK VPN when trying to access the Government Gateway?

As Keith says use a VPN. We did and it worked. We did of course have to say we live in the UK but as we have a property there as well that isn't a lie.

Re: uk pension
I'm sure that others living here will help with a specific
VPN service recommendation.
However to answer your question generally, the answer is you usually purchase it online.
As an example NordVPN is popular and you should be able to G o o g l e it to see their information page.
The key thing is to decide whether you will use it often or not. If you want to watch UK television then
you will need a reliable and fast service (this will also
depend on your own Internet service speed).
Hope this helps

I've used Tunnelbear for a few years; you can download from here, just click on Free - you're limited to 500MB per month, but you can "tweet" a brief comment to up your allowance to 1GB - of which the unused amount carries over! (The only reason I signed up to and "use" Twitter....}
As I only use Tunnelbear occasionally (and tweet when I remember) I find (having just started it up to check) that I currently have '49417MB remaining this month' .... 49+GB!!

We tried by phone but failed on one of the security questions. You are only given one chance to answer and the don't tell you which question you got wrong. They say you can phone again but if you cannot answer because you have forgotten something you are screwed.
A quick Google of VPN will show you what it is all about and there are a number of free vpn's out there that you could use for a one off such as this. Or maybe you know someone with a computer who has access to a vpn who could do it for you.

As far as I know, you can't use the portal to claim whilst residing permanently outside the UK unless you are willing to lie...
The two legitimate methods are by post or by telephone...
As COA has said, I was already to send off my documents to claim when I phoned to ask how I could make sure I would get them back... when a very helpful civil servant told me 'no problem, we will do it over the phone right now'.... it took 28 minutes over Skype...+44191 218 7777
