The Christmas before we left UK there was a planned power outage in our local area from 06:00 to 13:00 on the 25th of December due to “essential” maintenance, we got the power back at around 14:00 on the 27th of December! They had finished the maintenance in record time but forgot to turn us back on again! Nothing new in the World, you just learn to live with it.

Would companies in the U.K. suspend work digging up a road, power outages, water pipe repairs or such like just because the Indian, Jewish or whatever communities were celebrating a festival? I think not.

I couldn't agree more. Some of these replies are cringeworthy. We have not had a power cut or a planned power cut for weeks if not months, now they choose Christmas day. They are either thick or just insensitive to the needs of expats who will spend most of the day preparing the dinner or having social distancing friends around. I hope those infected do not have their day ruined.

I have close TC friends here in the UK who exchange Christmas cards and gifts, but mainly celebrate New Year (very much like the Scots with Hogmanay!)...
I've never heard them (or of ANY reports from any religion) complaining of disruption of services during Ramadan, Eid, or other "festivals"....

There is a fairly large expat community here and as this just seems to be a day picked out of the air and seems to me as if it could as easily be the 23rd or 27th of December so it does seem to strike me as a bit bloody minded.

Yes we are a minority but the same people who would quite justifiably criticise the same action in the UK that hits a minority there on Eid or the Chinese New Year will happily wave this through as getting at the Colonialist Imperialistic Brits.

If they scheduled this on St George's Day for example I doubt if anyone would even notice tbh.
