The statement, to be made at 8pm on Monday, will be followed by the recall of Parliament on Wednesday so MPs can debate the measures.

Further steps must now be taken to arrest this rise and to protect the NHS and save lives

A No 10 spokesman said: “The spread of the new variant of Covid-19 has led to rapidly escalating case numbers across the country.

“The Prime Minister is clear that further steps must now be taken to arrest this rise and to protect the NHS and save lives.”

Not sure this lady would agree

Kind of brings into perspective a lockdown where you can still shop for food when you want and order takeaways.
Still I guess you can only marvel at it's brutal efficiency.

Obviously that is brutal, then so is the Chinese vaccine procedure. Whereas in the UK and other countries the elderly, sick etc go to the top of the queue but in China it is diametrically the other way round. Presumably that's Herd mentality in action.

I'd say it's a fair bet that didn't happen. Many independent journalists in china have tried to verify it and failed. But the intended message certainly got through.

I hear Boris is speaking again tonight at 5pm GMT with a view to tightening flight restrictions - the smart money is on negative PCR tests being necessary for foreign travellers to the UK.

Intriguing that (from pictures shown) the house/apartment doors apparently open outwards - is this common in China? Otherwise, how would inward-opening doors be barricaded....? ;-)

Jofra, can't speak for all of China, but I know that in the last 5star I stayed at it took me a couple of days to stop trying to open bedroom door inwards. The same went for loos in Restaurant and the Airport. However, it might just be a design thing!!

Level 5 lockdown. A bit of a joke in my area (North West England)
I volunteer at a covid vaccination centre which is held at a GP Hub centre and have seen breaches of lockdown every day since it was supposed to come into force.
The small town centre is a a positive buzz of activity despite most shops being closed, and there is no reduction in road traffic.
Groups of people meeting for alfresco cappuccino from their favourite bistro is a common sight.
At the moment this lockdown is nothing like the first one.

The novelty wears off, people just get bored and sick of it. Any state of emergency can't be kept up forever unless you are willing to enforce it vigorously.
A lockdown could only ever work as letting the steam out of a pressure cooker. EG if you feel the health service is being overwhelmed then introduce it until the health service isn't overwhelmed.
It is never going to work as a long term, long running solution.

Whereas down here in the south west the lockdown does seem to be being observed. The dual carriageway by passing our village is quieter than normal with in the main large HGVs and the inevitable delivery vans being the main traffic. Town is quieter and even supermarkets do not seem busy.

Weekend will be a test as we will no doubt see a good number of people driving around and looking to park up and go for a walk.

There was a very shocking report on the BBC 6 o’clock news last night filmed inside a COVID ward at a hospital in London. If that report which featured NHS staff and COVID patients does not make people realise how serious the situation is then nothing will.
