TRNC "Night club" owners complain of downturn in business
Source : http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/42-gece- ... 58407.html
The report is quite long, so I won't translate it all, just certain bits ... the best bits, so to speak ... no pun intended.
Apparently in TRNC there are a total of 42 "gece kulüpleri", which is basically a TC euphemism for "licensed brothel", though some of the women are employed only as dancers ... apparently. In any case a total of 370 women are employed at these "night clubs".
Apparently the country that provides most of the women is Moldova, followed by Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kenya and Russia - though I'm surprised by the inclusion of "Russia" - when I worked in Moscow, I was told by my Russian friends that none of the prostitutes there were Russian - apparently they all came from the former Soviet Republics ... maybe though that is what the Russian authorities wanted us to believe
In any case, getting back to the report, there are 21 night clubs in the Lefkoşa area, 8 in the Mağusa area, 8 in the Girne area and 5 in the Güzelyurt area. The report makes a point of saying there are none in the Iskele area, which is the region towards the north-east of Cyprus ... it's not in the report, but it would seem to me they are implying that Iskele is too far for the Greek Cypriot men to travel to.
The report goes into great depth as to how the "industry" is all above aboard ... but I'll skip that. However, suffice to say, the owners are complaining that the government is taking too much of their profits. And this coupled with a loss of business is causing difficulties for them ... I know many TCs would come to the conclusion that this downturn in business is related to financial problems in the south ... though again this is not mentioned in the report.

Re: TRNC "Night club" owners complain of downturn in busines
It would be nice to think that this whole sector of TRNC economy disappeared. It is a disgrace when every other civilised country is trying to get rid of human traffiking and exploitation TRNC chooses to see it as a boom industry. One thing for certain,no government here will make any effort to close down the trade as it is too lucrative for all involved.

Re: TRNC "Night club" owners complain of downturn in busines
I have very mixed feelings about these 'night clubs', I dislike the fact that there is a need, but accept it, however, wish they were a lot less tacky in that why the need for all the Las Vegas style strip lighting. When you see a few in close proximity it does look like Las Vegas. We live in Kayalar and when you turn off the main road, at the junction and as far as the eye can see up the main road is like Blackpool illuminations. On top of that, one of them has a rotating power beam that lights up the sky up for miles.
I prefer the fact that there are licensed brothels rather than girls out on the street, however, am totally against human trafficking, so would rather see these places run by the girls who choose to go into that industry, at least they will be the ones who gain financially instead of supporting a ring of leeches.
No that my rant is over, in short, if TRNC must have them, make them more discreet, men who want to use them will always find where they are without them being to in your face. I actually find it quite distasteful and a bit embarrassing when visitors arrive when you have to explain what they are. Think it's definitely worse because we can't avoid them and here are so many in a small area.
Would love it if there wasn't a demand, but hey ho, boys will be boys

Re: TRNC "Night club" owners complain of downturn in busines
I believe a large majority of users of these places are visitors to the TRNC ie from RoC, Turkey, Greece, Israel, Eastern European countries and from Middle East.
Local demand for brothels would not create this large increase in building of the places, the demand is created by the building of them to take money from foreign visitors. If the majority of them were closed down overnight there would be a fall in government revenue and a fall in visitors so it pays the government to encourage the growth. A bit like Amsterdam but without the tourist value of red light district.
As for the comments of no new licences being issued does that mean the several new buildings on Lefkosa to Guzelyurt road are a mirage? Or are the illegal?

The fact that the TRNC openly condones female "trafficking" is a degrace to any civilised society. Respect for women in this country is getting worse not better as there is virtually no law against hitting or abusing women. Ask those who are trying so hard to make it a criminal offence. There is still to much of the "let the family sort it out", but so often they don't and the police have very little power, although occasionally they are called in.
