When I was young it was considered quite posh to have a bottle at home. Bit pricey here though I think it was 38ytl.

Commandaria which is a G/C sherry is almost 10 euros so Havrveys isn't too bad. Sherry seems to be expensive in Cyprus. Whiskey is usually cheaper here.

I've often wondered why Sherry should be so expensive here, I love the occasional glass of Tio Pepe. Dry Martini is a pricey as well.

I dont think Commanderia is sherry. I memory serves me it is a rich red liqueur - more like port if anything but a lot sweeter than a good port.

My mother' trifles were always much admired and envied - her secret was to use whisky instead of sherry.(also real cream, preferably Devon). Much to the dismay of my father , I might add who considered it a waste of his limited stock of good Scotch and generally too extravagant. Tempting to try the cheaper local whisky, but I suspect it would be too harsh.

I remember 'Emva Cyprus Sherry' being advertised on TV as a kid.
I see it is still sold in the UK but as fortified wine (not sure of the difference).

Yes, I remember Emva Cream ads, and actually seeing the distillery(?) in the South in the 60s.

Back to earlier post, the reason Spanish sherries and Italian Martini are so expensive is they are imported. They dont make sherry here, nor, as far as I know, in Turkey. I think the GC sherries are mainly sweet or medium, You would be hard put to find something to match Tio Pepe, Sophie

Fortified wine is jus that - wine fortified by a spirit (usually brandy). I expect this is one of those local trade name disputes - only sherry made in Spain ("Jerez") can be called sherry.

Speaking of which (well only slightly ot) there is a small piece in today's Daily Express about "Greek" Halloumi. Sauce for the goose isnt sauce for the gander.
