What is that going to achieve? Can COVID only be contracted during those hours?
It’s not many days since the last curfew finished. There were 31 cases yesterday and without real measures it will continue to rise.
It’s such a shame really after they defeated it early in the year they have let it get hold big time since. Too little, too late.

It was to be expected with the higher number of cases, and folk obviously not following social distancing, particularly over the festive season.

Let's hope everyone does as the government asks and stays at home only going out if essential or it may be a very miserable February.

Fingers crossed the 15 days after the new year the people who unfortunately caught it have stayed within their bubble and the next 15 days all the cases will be able to be sourced.

What does this mean exactly?

"Persons who want to go out on the streets for indispensable reasons will be subject to the special permission of the Police and District Governorship."

Is it like last time if you want to go somewhere other than the supermarket you have to ask for permission? As ever a bit of clarity would be helpful. Without a clear definition I guess it will be left to the interpretation of the officer who stops you. Probably find out tomorrow on my way for a hospital appointment!

Taken from Facebook Expats Uncut Group courtesy of Issy Atahasan whose translations always seem to be more accurate than Google.

"People who wish to go out on the street for essential reasons will be subject to special permission of the Police and the District Office."

Thanks for that update CW. I suppose it must mean not going anywhere other than supermarket, petrol, pharmacy, I would have thought hospital/doctor visits would be included too. It would be handy if the authorities would clarify and also publish SMS to contact for permission.

It seems that this curfew has been retracted. MP's decided against it. Curfew from 10pm until 5am remains the same up until 23rd Jan when it will be revised.

Thanks Soner. It's ridiculous that these statements are issued to the press and then retracted. It's the businesses and workers that I feel so sorry for here with all this nonsense. Left hand and right hand need to get together.

There are many articles in the local newspapers online about all this conflicting advice. I won't bother to post them all but think this one is relevant.

The President of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association, Lawyer Hasan Esendağlı, reminding that the decisions taken by the Infectious Diseases Supreme Board have not yet been published in the Official Gazette, stated that the Ministry of Health has the authority to publish the decision in the Official Gazette, and the current legal situation is a kind of 'Araf'. Truck; is confusion, ”he said.Esendağlı's statement from his social media account is as follows:“The legal problem arises at the following points: In order for the decisions of the Communicable Diseases Supreme Council to take effect, it must be published in the Official Gazette. So, to whom does this authority belong? According to the law, it is the Ministry of Health that will publish the decisions in the Official Gazette. In other words, the Council of Ministers or the Prime Minister does not have any authority or discretion to publish these decisions in the Official Gazette. But the decisions have not yet been published. Therefore, the current legal situation is a kind of "Purgatory"; is confusion.I think that the TRNC Chief Prosecutor will give the necessary opinion to the parties at the meeting of the Council of Ministers to which they are invited at 14:00, so that they can clearly understand their legal situation.I wish a little more patience. Infectious Diseases Executive Committee made some decisions on 16 January 2021 due to the pandemic in our country. You will appreciate that the Communicable Diseases Supreme Committee makes decisions regarding the implementation and / or rules to be applied in order to control the pandemic according to the number of cases seen in the country. However, it is up to the Council of Ministers to make a decision regarding the curfew. The decisions taken by the Supreme Committee on 16 January 2021 were thoroughly discussed and evaluated in the Council of Ministers. Considering the opinions of the Ministries related to the economy, it will be decided to follow the process for another week and to bring the decisions taken on January 16, 2021, if needed, by considering the pandemic in the country. For this reason, the decisions taken by the Communicable Diseases Supreme Committee on January 11, 2021 and entered into force upon publication in the official gazette will remain in practice as stated below until the new decisions are published. 1. After 22:00, it was decided that the decision to stop the activities in the areas of cafe, restaurant, patisserie, bet office, hairdresser, beauty center, coffee house, coffee house, gym, pita shop, bagel shop, barber shop will continue. Persons residing or working in Pile will be able to transfer without quarantine, provided that they submit the current negative PCR test results within 72 hours. 3. Due to the increase in local cases in our country, UN, EU, British Base Area, Buffer Zone, Missing Persons and Peace Force employees will be able to enter without quarantine, provided that they submit negative PCR test results within the last 72 hours. 4. It was deemed appropriate for the patients residing in Northern Cyprus and receiving routine treatment / treatment in Southern Cyprus to move to Southern Cyprus without daily quarantine in order not to experience victimization and to complete their treatment. The patient and his attendant (if necessary) who will be transferring for health purposes are required to submit the negative PCR test results made within the last 3 days upon arrival. In addition, patients and companions returning to our country after the treatment should perform PCR tests again on the seventh and fourteenth days of their entry into the country and submit the results to our Ministry. 5. It has been decided to extend the semester break until the next decision in all primary and secondary education schools in the TRNC. 6. Classroom, study, private lessons and course activities were suspended until the next decision. 7. It has been decided that the passage of persons residing in the North and working in Southern Cyprus is subject to quarantine until the next decision. 8. It has been decided that the passage of persons residing in the South and working in Northern Cyprus will be subject to quarantine until the next decision. 9. It was decided that the passage of students residing in the North and studying in Southern Cyprus and their parents are subject to quarantine until the next decision. 10. Since the opening of educational institutions in our country was postponed, it was decided that the passage of students and their parents residing in the South and studying in Northern Cyprus will be subject to quarantine until the next decision. 11. Within the scope of the Green Line Regulation, it has been deemed appropriate for people engaged in contactless trade to trade without quarantine. 12. It has been decided that ambulances cross the Yeşilırmak Border Gate for health purposes only, without quarantine in transit, and other crossings are subject to quarantine. 13. It has been deemed appropriate for people residing in Beyramudu to go daily to the Üstler Area without quarantine in order to perform their livestock and agricultural activities in the Üstler Region. 14. It was decided to extend the decision on not gathering more than 10 people in houses until the next decision. 15. Workplace opening ceremonies, weddings, cinema, theater, birthday, collective worship, engagement, wedding, religious festival, etc. it was decided to extend the decision regarding the cessation of operations until the next decision. 16. It was decided that funerals would be held with the participation of only first degree relatives. 17. It has been decided that the team sports competitions will be held without spectators. It would appear that SOMEONE leaked incorrect information that first time. Nothing changed since decision of January 11th. However not to say they won't change later this week of course. Visiting one of two coffee houses/patisseries last week, its clear to see why numbers are going up. Especially the blokes huddled over small tables playing backgammon. They seem to consider they are omnipotent.

I don't think the wrong information as such was leaked. It is more a case of the Infectious Diseases Committee make their recommendations but they have to be ratified by the Council of Ministers.

As someone else pointed out it is a Coalition Government who can't agree on the time of day let alone anything else. So the argument between safety and financial problems will always be there. If the numbers are stabilising or going down slowly I think we will stay as we are. They won't drop very quickly because the people that were tested positive have been going around for days if not weeks thinking they were OK and transmitting the virus to others. If the numbers continue to rise I think they will have little alternative but to go lock down again.

You are quite right though Sophie that a great many here still don't get it.

I can't see why people panic in any case, even when we had our toughest lockdown and Lapta, Alsancak and Karsiyaka were ring fenced with police stopping people from driving up the bye past or driving through Karaoglanoglu to get to Girne without prior permission, the supermarkets here had plenty of everything. The only people who appeared to panic at this end were those who will only shop at the large Ilellis, pathetic really.

So is Karsyaka, Lapta and Alsancak a large area, but the three together were ring fenced at a time when the figures in Alsancak were abnormally high. Police on the main roads. I was stopped once and explained all I wanted was to drive another 100yards to Starlings and was allowed to carry on.

Sophie I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but don't all the three you mention come under Kyrenia as does Essenteppe? They all come under the Kyrenia District and that does not just refer to the town.

When there was an abnormal number of cases in Alsancak much earlier last year, supposedly mostly down to a couple of extended families, the three areas were isolated in order to stop it spreading to Girne proper. I have friends in Alsancak who needed to get to hospital appointments or were working with animals, and they had to contact an address, type where they needed to get to, why and and what time approx they would return and then wait ten minutes or so. Then a reply came back giving permission, which they had to show the police near the Alpet garage. Not sure now how long this went on for, but not very long if memory serves.

I recall that last year and thought they may do the same with Alsancak and Lapta recently but it would seem not. When the figures are given daily it does give figures for Girne and Lefkosa but never really any of the villages. There were two positive in Essenteppe yesterday but they come under Girne. As the figures went up over night from 18 to 23 I suspect if the figures released later for today hsve risen we can rightly expect further restrictions.
