It has been decided that the TRNC police will have, at their disposal in the near future, a Toplumsal Olaylara Müdahale Aracı (which I can best translate as a Public Order Disturbances' Vehicle). The main purpose of this vehicle would be to blast anyone, the police consider to be causing a disturbance, with water at high-pressure. In any case, the government are currently asking for bids.

So as instead of bashing the poor people who protest because they aren't getting paid for the work they do. They can bash them with the force of water in one foul swoop. Disgusting.

They cannot pay the electric bills for government offices or pay wages but can afford to buy this monstrosity that may be used once a year, or is there something that the PEOPLE are not being told?

Any future protests should be held in mid August. I'll join in.

I think you will find that no such decision has yet been made. The police have put out to tender for a riot control vehicle.

The unions will have a huge reaction and have already come out with press statements today.

Does not really matter if they have bought or not, it is the fact they are even thinking about it makes most of us fall around laughing.

I can picture it now , its mid summer , water is short and farmers are in their olive groves shouting fire the water at me as they run round the trees getting a good watering and the headlines will read farmers protest at anything to get blasted by water cannon .

Mel,
I agree with you that the lgc is an excellent news web site, but I'll think you'll find that the decision to purchase the vehicle has actually been made. Yes, they are now at the stage where they are asking for bids, but the decision (with the government's approval) to purchase the vehicle has already been made.
Of course, there is a possibility that the government (hopefully) makes a "u-turn" on this, but I doubt it.

Anyone thinking of cooling down in august, best tonfind another way of doing it. This is no kids water pistol. This bigger toy can throw you some distance and can easily take your eye out if caught by the full pressure of the water jet.
I suggest the water parks!
If the public hold demonstartions here after the government take delivery I am certain that they will be dispersed using the water cannon. Beware TLB!

I saw one of these things in action in France once. They don't have pack a punch. Perhaps they will also use it for cleaning the roads after the "bin men" have chucked the stuff all over the place. I had to go use a couple of the roads near the Government offices last time and and it was no picnic I can assure you. I'd rather they'd spend the money on more fire prevention in the mountains.

Al least the fire service will have aback up, and to be honest it will probably get more use putting out fires

Arslan Bıçaklı, who is preisdent of the Turkish Cypriot Trades Union Congress, has condemned the government's decision to purchase this "water cannon vehicle".

"We don't even have one helicopter to extinguish fires," he said.

Bıçaklı sees this vehicle as a weapon particularly to be used in strikes, which he added the UBP are trying to outlaw, by attempting to change the constitution.

Next they will ban elections so it becomes a one party state it is certainly looking towards being a dictatorship. Hopefully the UBP election on 24th will bring forth a leader to be trusted.

OUCH, will someone help remove tongue from cheek!!!!!
