50% penalty for not renewing MOT during lockdown

Sod’s law my vehicle MOT was due during this lockdown with final 2 week window date of Monday 9th Feb.

As it is impossible to get an emissions tests or MOT during lockdown I decided not to pay the fee online until we know for definite when these services will resume.

Looked online today and noticed MOT fee has increased by 50% as the 2 week MOT window has now expired by just 24 hours.

Whilst we are only talking about an extra £15 somewhat annoying given that the lockdown and lack of services beyond our control and there is no flexibility to MOT early to avoid such a situation.

I must admit I wonder if you paid it on time, would it still be valid.? Then you would have a better argument.
Years ago our engine blew when the mot was due. I paid it on time and the garage never asked for extra when the vehicle was back on the road 8 weeks later.

I did consider paying for the MOT during the 2 week period but concerned that lockdown might be extended next week and a ? re the rules relating to timescales between payment and actual vehicle inspection.

Just checking, is your vehicle classed as commercial? If not, your MOT is likely to be due in the second half of the year.

Apologies if it is commercial vehicle but it's a fairly common mistake that people make - looking in wrong section of MOT dates.

Worth checking.
Kibtek have just announced no penalties for late payments so perhaps the government will too, I imagine a lot of people will be in same position as you.

How is this going to work for us stuck in the UK ? It could be years until we are allowed back.

Our MOT was due during their strike last year, we were fined 50% extra because not done in time.
