If your hiring a car example as a short stay tourist your UK driving licence is OK, hire car insurance covers.
If you are here on a permanent/ longer periods and own/use a privately owned vehicle you will need a TRNC driving licence. The reason for that appears to be the authorities state the vehicle insurance will not be valid in the event of an accident etc.

Thank you :+1:)
From what you have said and because we spend longer times with private vehicle my wife will need to apply for a Trnc licence.
Do you know, Is that possible online or in person ?

If you own your own vehicle you have to have the licence. You also have to apply in person not on line.

The process is fairly painless, depending on your location go to the local licensing office, Girne next to the state hospital, with the completed application form and your UK DL,the documents stated on the form including passport sized photo. You can get the DL for upto 10 years I believe, price varies with the length required, they issue a receipt that you produce if stopped by Police. 10ish days later go back to the office and collect the licence etc.

Passport sized photo is too large. You must tell photographer it is for driving licence

They accepted passport sized photo's for our renewal. Also, they are currently saying 3 weeks to collect after applying.

Thank you for all advice.
Is there any age restrictions applying at Girne for first time Trnc licence
Reason I ask is we had read somewhere that if under 60 and it is first time applying then we have to go to Nicosia.
Hope that is not the case and she can apply at Girne, so much better for us.
Is that the same location as where the car tax office is ?

We did our first time application today. We were told it had to be done at Nicosia. As you go in the tax building (Gelir ve Vergi Dairesi) you turn right, go around to the right after the bank of driving license counters (on the right - Ehliyet), and then go in to a blue door behind the counters where they process first time applications. We had UK sized passport photos and they wouldn't accept them as they were too big, we had to go to the knick-knack shop opposite the police station and he has a photo booth that does multiple sizes on one sheet for 40tl. You also need the completed application form, a photocopy of your residency permit, passport photo page, and both sides of your UK license - again, had only copied one side of the license but the cafe on the first floor can do copies. Once all this was solved, we handed in the documents, had to wait 5-10 minutes for our names to be called, handed over the fee and was given a temp license and told to come back in 4 weeks.
