Dog food - it takes the biscuit

I was very surprised that 80 percent of the contents of of a tin of dog food is water but practically no meat. My unscientific, per kilo, comparison between tinned dog food and dog biscuits showed biscuits as containing 3 times more protein twice as much fat 4 times as much fibre and twice the other "additives". On a cost basis even cheap tins work out being 50% more expensive than reasonable quality biscuits. In addition, 10% of the overall weight of tinned food is the tin itself!
Of course different products will give different results but why pay a lot of money for water and steel sheeting?

Eagle, this info has been a given for as long as I can remember. Back in the day, dog biscuits meant just that, biscuits and little or no protein or vitamin content but gradually the water content in tin started to be recognised (plus a severe plaque problem) and Kibble became more and more popular and healthier, provided plenty of fresh water was nearby. However, in other countries, more and more fresh/raw food or frozen is being produced and the turnover both container and money wise is huge (but expensive if you have more than a couple of dogs)!!

Cook chicken necks for protein level and dog biscuits/kibble as carb.

butterfly, I did that for a while, but the cooking smells got me down. Years and years ago I used to have Afghans and they were fed on tripe. Twice a week the local abattoir dumped the stuff on the back lawn and I had to get the hose out and clean them immediately before thousands and thousands of flies descended. You needed a strong stomach for that!!

I just can’t bear the smell of tinned food. A bit of gravy in the boiling necks and it’s not too bad!!!
