Mobile Phones Recommendation

I am looking to buy a new mobile phone. I saw a post with recommendations a short time ago, but even using 'Search' I cannot find it. There was a recommendation for a Xaomi (or similar) on sale in the phone shops in Girne. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. PB

I've recommended Xiaomi phones in the past, usually taking advice from son-in-law as mobiles are his business (although not with Xiaomi). I've had mine for a while now and really been happy with it.
If it's any help, about 3 weeks ago he recommended the Poco M3 for a friend of mine, said it was the best bang for buck with the budget which was around £200. https://sharafstore.com/?s=poco+m3&dgwt ... =1&lang=tr

According to google maps, they seem to have a place in Girne
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Sha ... 33.3219302

May well be available at other phone outlets in Girne, you would have to check.

I just love my Xiaomi, its so great and so reasonable. I've recommended to 5 people so far and they are absolutely delighted. Three cameras, the whole bank shoot. Can't fault them one bit. Most of the mobile phone people in Girne etc stock them. BTW a Redmi is a Xiaomi, they are one and the same.

Yes Redmi, Mi, Poco are all Xiaomi. The problem I had was the choice, they have so many models, hence asking S-I-L and he gives me a short list within budget, to cut down on looking at so many reviews/comparisons. I never do top of the range, expensive phones, completely wasted on me.

My friend is very pleased with the Poco M3, the only thing is, that the telephoto (whatever that is) needs to be practised on, I am told.

I was point and click from the off with photos. Needed a bit of practice to do the fiddly tarting up bits on the pics I must admit.

Yes, just go into Turkcell/Telsim and you can get a new sim card. I had to get a smaller sim for the Xiaomi, cost me 19TL at the time, but possibly gone up a little by now - that was to keep my old phone number.
If you get a brand new sim with new number, Turkcell/Telsim will do all the necessary steps to register, doesn't matter whether you buy a phone from them or elsewhere here.

My sincere apologies CW. Blame it on PB, I only answered a question, seeing as I am a very nice person (completely tongue in cheek there for those who know me better).

p.s. Get yourself into town or order online pronto then. ((W\))

One more for you AM!

If I get a new phone, but keep my old SIM card and my number, will it be recognised when I do on-line banking, etc? At the moment when I log in to a banking site, it says, " checking your device". I would not want to register with the banks all over again, particularly with my level of expertise, or lack of!

You will need to download the Banking app onto your new phone and then it will recognise the SIM card and off you go.

:-P See AM you are just too quick off the mark.

I have just messaged you to tell you that in fact they have replied on Whatsapp and the store is there just that I couldn't find it. See if I can do better on foot tomorrow.

Have a look at viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51834&p=267248&hil ... on#p267248 which will give you location.

I've never registered a phone here, but think that I read that they charge you around 30% of the valuation here of the phone. If you have a receipt, might be worth taking it along.

Registered ours last Monday. Go to the office in Lefkosia, which is a short way down the small road beside Domino Pizza. The guy at the door takes your passport and enters you on the register (for Covid Track n Trace, I believe), we then filled in one form per phone, needing information such as make, model, and IMEI number for each sim slot. We then had to pay 23.83tl per phone to start the registration process. They take a copy of your passport, check the IMEI numbers on your phone, and then you are given a copy of your form, plus a receipt for the money paid, and this is taken to a customs desk, who tells you the tax to be charged - I believe there is usually a customs officer in the same building, but the day we went the customs staff were all on holiday so we had to go the next day to Kyrenia harbour customs - my Realme 6 phone was 300tl, and my wife's Mi 8 Lite phone was 270tl - anyway, once tax is paid you get another receipt, which you take to your sim provider (we were already using TurkCell), who charge 4tl (I think that's what it was) to update their system - you will, after a few hours, get an SMS message confirming the IMEI numbers are being processed, and then that they are registered. All done.
Re how much tax - the guy at the door has a list of phones and tax rates - he spent more time giving this info to people popping in, than anything else, when we were there...

I read an article about two or three weeks ago where Xiaomi announced that they will offer only one OS update to their models. So if the overall long term functionality and safety issues are of any concern, I would strongly suggest any of you guys planning to spend your money in Xiaomi to think twice. OnePlus offers three OS updates and Samsung obviously even four (at least to their top models). Then of course there is Apple beating all the Androids.

Not many people keep their phones very long. In fact the industry thrives on the fact that most people want the latest whatever make all of the time. Also phone batteries if not taken care of won't last many years. Many people still charge their phones to 100% every time and often leave them on charge overnight which is a sure way to shorten the lifespan.

I would be interested in reading the article if you have a link. I will Google it in the meantime to check for myself.

As regards Apple beating all Androids. Beating them in what respect? Being cheaper? Being able to use more and varied applications? No maybe not. I have never owned an Apple product nor ever will because I do not want to be tied to their products that do nothing more than the average Android product at a far greater price.

This isn't my thread but I don't think the intention of it was to start the age old discussion (argument) of Apple or Android so I won't say any more about that.

EDIT: Quick Google showed:-

Xiaomi devices usually get one Android version update, but get MIUI updates for four years. The first MIUI ROM was based on Android 2.2.

By saying Apple beats all the Androids I was referring to their OS update span which is about 5-6 years. I was not trying to restart the never ending discussion about iPhone vs. Android in general. I have both an iPhone and OnePlus and I´m quite happy with both of them.

Thanks for the clarification. I certainly am not one to be changing my phone every time a new one comes out but I also have never kept a phone for 5-6 years. In fact the only reason we are looking for a new one now is mainly to have a TRNC one as both ours are UK phones but one of our phones needs charging every day and is too full so will not download some updates as there is insufficient memory and there is little else I can remove.
