Is that normal? We have had the ac on, but not silly. Always turn it off when we are not in the room, close windows etc.

Got to try and be careful this month as not so much credit left.

How do I work out if I have an inverter or not?

We have a solar panel for our hot water tank but not sure what effect it has, if any at all.

When I had family & friends over in the past, there were 8 air-cons going, most not inverters, paid approx £1200 over 3 months electricity bills.

Sounds about right then soner. Some of that time was isolation and we have been cooking at home a lot… so that probably explains it.

Like yourself, we've also not lived in the UK for a long time, so I don't know the cost there.
As for here in Cyprus, we paid 650TL last month and were quite surprised it wasn't more, but we do have ac inverters.
By the way, we save a little by using the washing machine and dishwasher after 6pm, to avoid the most expensive rate of the day.

Over the last two years, our (3 people) electric has averaged about £75 per month - but then our heating is gas-fired CH, so gas has averaged £88 (cooking is electric and gas)....

Hi Deniz1 - If you use the washing machine at 7am (and finish the wash before 9am), then it's at the cheapest rate.

Allow me to translate the attached chart below, which is the summer tariff:

Weekdays
Cheapest rate : 23:00 - 09:00
Most expensive rate : 09:00 - 18:00
"Normal" rate : 18:00 - 23:00

Weekends and holidays
Cheapest rate : 02:00 - 09:00
"Normal" rate : 09:00 - 14:00
Most expensive rate : 14:00 - 18:00
"Normal" rate : 18:00 - 02:00

By the way, the most expensive rate is twice that of the least expensive rate.

So basically, start getting out of bed earlier to do the washing and dishwasher.

Obviously, in this weather, it’s the ac that is clocking up most of the costs. I would open the windows to let a draft through but there is no draft at the moment and it’s too humid. To try and save on ac we have a couple of fans that are on pretty much all day. Are fans costly to run?

How much does it cost to run a fan?
The good news is that fans are surprisingly energy-efficient, especially when compared to an electric air-conditioning unit. Research by energy-saving assistant Loop revealed that a 40W fan running for 8 hours cost just 6p. While a 1003W Air conditioning unit running for the same time cost £1.44.

Lucky you! That seems very low indeed.

My UK bills are as follows. Electricity, which includes cooking and 24 hour dehumidifier and all the other usual bits, PLUS gas for central heating set at 22 degrees and available 24/7 by 365 days I pay £110 per month and at the end of this year will be £200 in credit. So that works out at about £95 per month.

I'm glad you "loved" it ForestPixie ... that said, I'm not quite certain why you loved it so much. However, being a Maths teacher I know some students would unfortunately feel a little intimidated by seeing something like, say, "0.6308 TL/kW" ... so I thought it best to write it in the form we're wanting to understand it as ... ie. when is the cheapest rate and when is the most expensive rate.

Hey ho, as I stated in message 8, we save a little by using the washing machine and dishwasher after 6pm ... but, as Trigger stated, it's the air con that takes most of the kilowatts, and ours is, more often than not, on at the most expensive time.

Ah you're a teacher that explains it, I used to teach but quit. I know exactly where you are coming from with explanations. I'm the same with appliances, I'm either after 6pm or before 9am. If I'm still up at midnight I sometimes put the dishwasher on then. Air con is only used from time to time in our house.
