Water tanks unused 18mths
Hi there. We are hoping to come out in Oct after 18mths to our house.
We are worried about the water tanks water that has sat there for all that time.
Any hints, tips, treatment that we or someone else can do to make it safer to use.
Thanks.

Isolate the water to your incoming tank Normally the isolation will be at the water meter. Pour chlorine in this and you roof top cold tank. Let it stand for a few hours. Start your house pump. Drain water out of your hot and cold taps slowly then stop your pump , allow water to drain from your roof top cold tank. Repeat the process. Flush system with incoming water. Water in outside tanks gets very warm in summer which is a breeding ground for nasty bugs. Always worth doing tank maintenance .

Thank you. Water already turned off, so what water we have, has been in tanks all the time.
Any idea how much chlorine we should put in. 2 tanks at ground level, with hot and cold on roof.

Dawnie I would half a bottle of bleach in each tank.

Dawnie, I would also push down the ballcock float to raise the water level in both tanks so as much as the tank internals are covered as possible!

It's also sensible to remove and soak the shower heads and hoses in chlorine , a standard procedure in NHS hospitals.

Yes, I’m taking Milton tablets for that.
