Has Rishi Sunak helped the TRNC?

Air Passenger duty, APD paid when you leave the U.K. will cost £87 when flying London to Larnaca.

If you fly London to Istanbul (then to Ercan), APD will be only £13.

Starts April 2023.

Of course, the departure airport can be anywhere in the U.K. but if the journey (from London as this is calculated as the leaving point for the tax) is under 2,000 miles as opposed to over 2,000 this will be the difference in this tax.

Istanbul may be getting some passengers stopping there for over 24 hours to take advantage of this saving.

If I have read it correctly then this could be good news in the Budget today.

Air passenger duty for journeys 2000 miles and under will remain the same, those over 2000 and under 5500 miles will have an increase of £3.

Agreed, but plan a stop over in Istanbul for over 24 hours, or buy two separate tickets (not transit) and you will only pay the lower tax.

Have I misunderstood something?

I read the article as follows;

If your flight from U.K. to Cyprus (ROC), the APD will be £87 as the tax calculation means that London to Nicosia is over 2,000 miles.

However, if you fly from U.K. to Turkey (doesn’t matter if it’s Istanbul or Izmir, etc, the APD is only £13, because London to Istanbul is less than 2,000 miles.

So a family of four adults could save £292 by simply flying to Turkey, then having allowed a changeover (not Transit) of say three hours, which is fairly normal, then on a separate ticket, fly on to Ercan.

Where do you find it’s only saving £3?

This £3, is the “increase” in tax that comes into effect from April 2023.

I must admit, I have no idea how airlines can sell tickets from Heathrow to Larnaca for less than £150 one way, as most of that is taxes, fuel and fees, etc.

If you do buy seperate tickets does this mean you have to collect luggage and check in.
