Car cleaning equipment

I asked this once before on here I think but struggling to find anywhere in or near Girne that sells decent car cleaning equipment. Looking for decent cleaning cloths, polish and compound to remove swirl marks?

I did buy some decent wash and shine stuff before from a place that I won't name near China Bazaar but without a doubt it was in my early days and I paid dear for it! Lately I have bought some stuff from Motor City but they have a very limited choice.

So anywhere else that anyone can recommend would be very useful.

I got a roll of the cotton cloth that the painters use and turtle wax plus hard wax in the motor accessory shop in the old Turkish quarter. If you go from the court towards the mosque it's on the left about halfway along.

You can buy Turtle wax products from Mr Pound and soft micro fibre cloths as well. That's the only brand i have seen there.
There is a place called Gani Works ( Ozankoy ) and MNC ( Ozankoy / Catalkoy ) both on the main road who do car detailing and they can get rid of swirl marks professionally but at a cost. If you DIY then they may sell you some of their products that they use. Worth asking i suppose.

Thanks for that Saddique. I called in at one of them last week and was given a quote for doing the work but it was far too much considering I can do most of it myself to a reasonable standard 'if' I can find the products. They didn't seem too interested in selling product to me though.

I always buy my microfibre cloths from Mr Pound these days but their range of cleaning products is very limited. Looking for polishing pads and compound cream now as I have clay bars and polish.

There is a very good car shop near the wednesday market, the shop is on the right hand corner of the roundabout.
All cleaning products sat covers etc.

Yes thanks for that. That is Motor City but their choice is quite limited though.

Chriswright03 , The only other place that i know that sell good Polish and compound selection for cars is at SuperHome DIY in the south ( Stroovolos area )

Yes been there before and bought stuff. I made a decision some while ago not to go over to the South again so I will have to try and source stuff here.

Chriswright03 - In the North there is a Shop called Genc on the main road in Karaolanoglu and if i remember correctly they sell car cleaning products like polish and compound.........if you get stuck you are welcome to use my Dual Action Polisher with the polishing pads as i have these in my collection and i am in Catalkoy.

Yes Genc have a few bits so will pop along and have a look there as well next time I am out and about.

That is a very kind offer but I shudder to think of the damage I could cause with one of them and probably think I would be safer doing it by hand. Not looking forward to the aches and pains in the shoulders though.

Car detailing is not everyone's cup of tea , and it is very time consuming however the results can be awesome. Good luck.

Thanks. I did a bit before on our cars when in the UK and enjoyed it but this is different. Our car has swirl marks from poor cleaning routine with the previous owner and if I can do something to improve it I would like to. I am not a fan of car cleaning as much these days especially here as you clean it to within an inch of it's life one day and the next day it is covered in dust but it is still a huge investment financially and I want to keep the car looking as good as I can to protect it against the harsh conditions here.

The swirl marks can be taken out by using a good compound and then a polish as you already know, ideally machine polish works best ( less atxing on the shoulders and arms) ..........as for the dust i have a black car and it gets dusty the very same day....when the car gets dust on it , use a dry micro fibre towel just to wipe the dust off ......i find that works a treat for a few days Also try avoiding the hand car wash places as they have minute grit on their wash mitts / sponges which will cause the swirl marks. Another way of minimising swirl marks is to use a 2 bucket wash method if possible with grit guards in the bucket. This is a good washing technique and helps keep the paintwork better for longer. I do agree the dust here is a pain !

At risk of boring the pants of others on here who have no interest in cleaning their cars let alone detailing.

Our car is very dark blue so it also shows the slightest bit of muck. Even the odd rain drop we had the other day makes it filthy because the rain here isn't the cleanest I have ever seen.

I have never ever had anyone else wash my car in the 50 years I have been driving and don't intend to start now. I always use a mitt these days and sponges are banned. I did work for a Funeral Company and part of the induction was I had to be shown how to wash a car! To be fair the lad who was showing me said he was embarrassed having to do it as our discussions must have made him realise I had washed the odd one or two in the past and he had seen my car. So washing a hearse or limousine we had all the best product you could buy from Auto Glym but we used sponges! I did say if I ever saw anyone touch my car with a sponge they may need a ride in the back of one of our cars. Later on I saw a colleague washing the Hearse before a funeral and when he had to fill his bucket again he just tipped what was left of the water AND the sponge onto the tarmac drive. No wonder the car was covered in swirls and scratches.


I don't go to excess here these days so one bucket will do but I am careful and ensure the mitt only goes so far down into the water. My main reason for cleaning the car is that after a recent visit to a garage it came back with white overspray on the bonnet. So I have removed that with a clay bar and now I thought I may as well do the swirl marks as well while I am at it. Should be easier in the cooler weather as well.

This post may be a bit irrelevant, but have you tried the self cleaning stalls at the Akacan gas station?

They let you use the pressure car wash which is super fun and relaxing.
