Water softeners

Anyone have one? Was it worthwhile?

Yes worth doing. Bought from Screwfix whilst in the UK and our plumber out here did the fittig

Might sound a bit of a daft question but where did you fit the water softener? Neighbours here have it outside on the pipe by the water meter??

Also, where in the system did you fit it? after your water meter but before it goes into your cold tank, on the outlet of your tank before your pump, or after the pump before your taps?

You can't fit it before the meter as that pipework belongs to the Beledia.

It needs to be fitted ideally on the mains cold water service to the ground tank (if you have one) or to the cold roof tank .

I had one installed when the house was built, a proper one that uses salt to soften the water and yes it works well, no limescale in this system. it is fitted in the pool pump room where the water from the under ground storeage tank comes into the system before it feeds into the house. Reasonably cheap to run per anum, about 10 x 25 kilo bags of salt plus small amount of electricity and a few tons of water when it flushes itself every two weeks or so (that is adjustable according to how much water you use). Only draw back that I can see is that the water in the house system tastes salty, so we use the large water flaggons for drinking and cooking needs. Doesn't help preserve the life of the metal hot water storeage water tanks though, I am on my third in 8 years.

I bought an inline push fit lime scale inhibitor unit, but had to adapt my pipework in the pump room to do it, they last about 12 months, but I got them from the uk and have 5 years supply
It required to welded 3/4 female adaptors, then 2 x 200mm lengths of 15mm copper pipe with 3/4 male adaptors soldered onto the ends, i also put in isolation valves each side of the inline unit so changing it now quite simple
You need a basic understanding of plumbing and the right parts & tools of course

Hi and thanks for the reply. Yes its the salt based resin regeneration softener we are thinking about. We don't drink the tap water anyway so no problems there.

Do you know if all types of salt are available in the TRNC as I understand there are different types depending on your softener, i.e. block, granular etc. Some softeners can take all types of salt and some take one specific type.

I would hope I can install it before our tank but after the meter so that everything from start to finish is softened water.

Thanks, yeah can do most plumbing jobs but as you say its having the tools available and knowing where to go over here as we don't live in TRNC full time.

I have also supplied and fitted several water softeners for other people over the years.
