Great fish and chips - no worries paying thae asking price for Haddock and not cheap "white" fish.

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
I happen to agree with eyebob, that talking about British prices for fish and chips isn't relevant to North Cyprus, and the response to their post was over the top. As prices here are roughly the same for fish and chips, obviously this must reflect the general cost of the product, its preparation, overheads and profit. If you don't actually run a restaurant here, I can't see how you can decide what the price of a dish should be. I have seen comparisons with the UK before and it's really a waste of time, we live here in North Cyprus so just accept these are North Cyprus prices. And also, I see some negative comments about businesses on the forum and if I were the owner, I'd be devastated. It's always been my view that, if you can't say anything good, hold your peace.
Do your best to grow old disgracefully.

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
We enjoyed our meal there the other night and there was certainly enough to satisfy my husband's hunger and too much for me to finish! Says a lot that my husband was too full to finish what I had left
I don't feel eyebob's reply was offensive either but then again I don't take offence easily;-)

BigOz, I do agree with your about the little Kepap Houses opposite the Karakum Lemar (slightly prefer the one on the RHS if you stand with your back to Lemar) Freshly chopped salad filling, lashings of meat, hot and tasty and a large mug of coffee. Staff are ALWAYS laughing and great to chat with - 8tl - how good is that?? Prefer that to fish and chips and day of the week. Highly over rated wherever it comes from IMHO.

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
Each to their own and everyone's tastes differ but Salty's doesn't only sell fish to go with the chips.
My husband had a steak and kidney pie and saveloy which he enjoyed, I dislike both, but my fish was excellent and the chips were delicious
Not saying we would eat there regularly as we enjoy various cuisines, but when we do fancy fish/scampi/pie and chips Salty's would be our choice.

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
I kept to my promise and the other night I actually took my son there. I bought 2 x take-away Cod & chips. Here is my unbiased opinion:
The taste of both the fish and the chips were excellent, cooked just right!
The lads serving the food were very friendly and nice to their customers.
However, I was not happy with two issues. Never mind the price difference in UK - so I do not mind the higher price for the right taste in Cyprus, BUT the cod was half the size of what I would get in UK. It would be good to get at least the same size fish for the higher price.
Second point is the misleading price list on the board. The price for "take away Cod" on the board says 14.00 TL - one would innocently assume, that is the price for "cod & chips". Then you are charged 36 TL for the take away and you are told "the extra 8 TL is for the chips!" (works out 18 TL each). Both the lads claim they worked many years in UK at fish shops.
Unless things have changed drastically over the past few years, I do not remember shops listing the prices separately for the types of fish and the chips! You see the prices for Cod & chips, Rock & chips, Plaice & Chips, chicken &chips etc. I would have thought the chips go without saying as the norm, unless you say you do not want any and ask what the price would be without the chips!
As someone else said, everyone to their taste. BUt I have to respond to MoBry's comments by saying - people have not got the high standards they receive today in food/clothing/goods/medication/service etc. by feeling obliged to saying "good things" only about what they got, or else "holding their peace"! That to me is really very narrow! With such an attitude we would still be in the middle ages! Also, there is no reason why negative comments, where due, should not be made about businesses in forums. It is called "constructive criticism" and can only help improve things for everyone. How would you like if TV and Newspaper critics talked only about the good places and services and left everyone/everything else out?

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
BigOz, certainly where we lived in the SE of England, seven years ago when we left, the chips were priced separately from the fish and priced as large/medium/small portions.
The same was true of the fish you could order it in three sizes.
Back then when one of us suggested fish and chips for tea on a Friday, it meant let's drive down to Swanage on the Dorset coast for supper So I guess they were really expensive chips when you added the petrol and the hour and fifteen minute drive lol!

Oh well, another "rude comment" from me! I don`t know where you hail from in the UK, but every "chippie" I have been in sells fish and chips separately. What if you don`t want chips with your fish? Even though you state that what you purchased was good, you still nit pick.I should stick to the good wholesome food you previously mentioned,i.e. kebabs!

My two local chippies have everything priced seperately, they sell small portions for pensioners too.

Every chip shop I have ever been in has chips priced separately to the fish-and I hail from the Blackpool area where there are lots of quality chippies.

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
I must admit I lived in London very many years ago, but when visiting North London last time, couple of shops I have been had the fish & chips as well as chips prices separately because many just eat the chips after a drink or two. I must be getting confused with what is on offer here - all other fish and chips places in Girne offer the price for the whole thing! Not just fish and chips but mushy peas also included. In fact the one on the main road to Alsancak which tastes just as good, costs 20 TL to sit and eat but you get plenty chips, fresh salad/mushy peas and pickled onions all included. I have been to 3 other fish and chips places in Girne and NONE of them offer separate price for fish or ask extra for pickles or salad that automatically come on to the table.
"eyebob" you definitely have a problem mate! Your contribution to this forum was 2-3 posts in just as many months until you decide to make silly comments because you do not agree with what someone else wrote in this thread. I do not "hail" from anywhere but I might decide to do so on you if you carry on with your silliness! I am a born Cypriot who studied and lived in UK for a very long time! Fish & Chips is not exactly my favourate food when eating out, so if I may be just as rude, I shall leave it to pesants like your kind self to become a specialist on the subject and a speaker for the Fish&Chips brigade! My suggestion to you is just stick to advertising what you want to buy or sell once a month and zip it
Furthermore, since you still insist on taking it upon yourself to interpret my comments as an attack on whatever, and even talk about döner kebap in a demeaning way as you did in your last post, I suggest you b****r off back to where you came from and enjoy your greasy fish & chips all day!
By the way, everything I said so far in this forum, I also told the guys working in Salty's when I bought the food. I really do not have time for idiots who cannot understand the difference between constructive criticism and an attack on a business. Salty's staff were grateful for my thoughts and we ended up parting on a very friendly tone, with me saying they will definitely do well if they keep up the quality of the food & service. SO, what is your problem?

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
You are obviously a tad upset Bigoz.
In fact when I read your last reply it was a bit 'Monty python' and for some reason reminded me of the Frenchman In this scene from a Monty python film-

At the end of the day I don't think 'fish and chips' is worth getting so agitated about.

Re: 'salties' fish and chips
hi crofter and monkey justice - very sorry i started this whole thing - and i got the spelling wrong - omg - the whole point was to say that i enjoyed the fish and chips very much (having just just returned from a visit to family back in horsham at xmas and having had fish and chips there for the first time in 7 years) and the kyrenia/girne version was every bit as good as the uk version (which was great) - just had to voice my opinion - not start a debate about portion sizes/prices etc! - for gods sake what is wrong with everyone - either you like or dont - why the slanging match?
