No surprise there that the citizens want the adoption if the euro . I saw various articles saying it's impossible but what I'm really hearing is the government is influenced by turkey ...


So much for any elected government representing the will of the people ....the new signed protocols with turkey include specifically reducing the use and reliance on foreign currency when actually 72% of the citizens want the opposite

As long they rely on Turkey for a substantial part of their income, which would still be linked to the lira, exactly what difference in real terms will it actually make? Prices will probably be more consistent, but there will as usual be the initial increase in prices as everything is rounded up.
I believe the really have the choice of either becoming a real part of the Eu, which will mean joining the RoC, or becoming a Turkish state with full control by the Turkish government. It’s fairly obvious that the regular Shenanigans of the politicians here will never lead to stability of any form and is beyond a joke.

Two things which I would consider.
As said, the TRNC reliance on Turkey who pays for almost everything.

To adopt the Euro would I think would mean recognising the TRNC
.as a sovereign state.

Listening to will of the community doesn't count, look at the UK minority cyclists overrule all the other motorists, minority groups have their views overriding the majority...so no different here.

Mmmm 500 people were asked out of a population of over 300,000, so 360 were for the Euro. That represents 0.1%, at most, of the population, hardly representative. A much bigger sample would be required to be meaningful.

Clearly the main difference would be salary would be in euro ! And not depreciating every year 50% against every other currency and whilst there would be inflation it wouldn't be at 70 % or more ...

I'm sure most expats who have £ income don't really care and actually would prefer to have the never ending depreciating lira . But for the locals a more stable currency has the obvious advantage .

Yes clearly turkey would most definitely not favour it .for trnc using the euro is exactly the same as using the tl as it's other countries central banks controlling monetary policy notably interest rates and the ability to print money etc . They come up with a load of reasons why they can't use it but it's essentially the same but a more stable currency .

I saw what the euro did euro did to the Portuguese economy in 2000. Prices went through the roof overnight. Keep away from it.

It can ever happen as long as the TRNC is dependent upon Turkey, just look at tha amount every year they give to fill any budget deficit and the investments they make. Until TRNC can balance its own budget there is no chance and no way can they do that.

But what if the euro is a disaster in the making... ? There many fiscal difficulties in quite a few of the countries that comprise the euro zone...

Prices in the south are largely more than the north, mainly since moving to the euro.

Why the TRNC would want to tether itself to a sick cow on the edge of a cliff defeats me.

History says It can't be as bad as the tl....and it's supposedly the ultimate goal for both turkey and trnc ...no surprise that the expats are not in favour of it as it might hurt their pockets but 72 % of the locals want it . Many here would have a different perspective if their income was in tl and they where offered to change that to euro.....

That’s just what the Euro needs, another economic basket case. Apart from the short term when they made hay it didn’t work out too well for Greece
