Restaurant pricing in Euro's €

I went today to a once 'cheap & cheerful' restaurant in downtown Girne, the name of which is the capital of France selling coffee and was astounded that the food & drinks menu was priced up in Euro's € and on quick calculation found it was more expensive than a 'high-end' restaurant. I did ask whether I was in North Cyprus and walked out!!

You'll find the same thing started to happen last year in a cafe in Girne which abuts the main car park, next door to P.O. Not sure they are doing the same thing this year. The buses from down South drop the tourists off close by. Its happened for years in the little cafes in the Bandabulya and surrounding in Lefkosia.

Been like that at one hotel on the Lapta strip, think more will move to Euros or GBP. Even a local yapi and electronic store their prices are in Euros or US$'s

A couple of years ago I bought some gear in the largest Yapi market group, secateurs etc., some priced in Pounds, some in Euro and a couple in Dollars. The answer to my question was "we price them in the currency that we have to buy them! i.e. look out for Yen,Yuan, Schillings etc. If they start pricing in GBP, paying for goods could be problematical, as GBP is like hens teeth some weeks.

A lot of the expat run restaurants used to price their menus in pounds about 18-20;years ago. It reduced the need to update the prices weekly, or even, daily due to lira depreciation. Went to Turkey over 20 years ago and the prices in the tourist markets were in Deutschmarks.

We went into a restaurant in central Girne with friends that were staying with us a couple of years ago. They gave us menus in sterling, I asked for one showing Lira as we lived here which they brought us and the pricing was very different. It just shows at that time there was one price for tourists and one for locals. Not saying that is the case now, but it would certainly not surprise me.
