Sadly this is one of the reasons we moved over to Northern Cyprus after nearly 20 years in Turkey, love the Counrty and its people but NOT the politics

interesting dilemma then,
Does the northern area of Cyprus take ownership and affiliate with either the ROC or with Turkey. Choices oh what choices.
Given that many Turkish Cypriots hold ROC and therefore EU passports they have the freedoms that such a document awards. There remains a deal of mistrust but this suits the current position of advantage. The EU looks at the North as part of its domain and continues to fund some small projects. Peace prevails as monies flow from Turkey, the EU, the UN and of course the black economy of an unrecognised Republic.
On the one hand the gravy train of Turkish money awarded to the isolated TRNC is both welcomed, and allows many indigenous locals to live in the lazy hazy world of welfare and handouts.
The stand alone GDP within the TRNC is gambling and the illicit dealings that fall below the international radar of acceptance.
It really is somewhat of a two faced position based upon your ethnicity and what you can get for doing nothing or very little.
Foreigners including ex pats are of little consequence within the bigger political and military picture. Turkey and the ROC are at odds in winning favour with the indigenous Turkish Cypriot because they could sway the balance upon a negotiated settlement. A settlement that would leave either of the two in the position of power. Will the old school guarantor powers uphold and support any settlement? Only if it offers some advantage and permits some presence upon the battle station Cyprus.
