Owning a car
If you are a swallow and visit twice a year, are you allowed to own a car and run it on a UK license? No residency, just visiting 2 X 80 days or so??
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Owning a car
I was told by an expat in during a visit to a cafe in Girne the other day that expats can no longer exchange foreign license's for TRNC license anymore?
He mentioned only Turkish people can do this and other expats wanting to drive have to take a driving test.
Is this true??

No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Re: Owning a car
Can you use an international driving license?
Don't want to do residency with all that entails, am I right in saying that you need to be resident to get a license??
I guess it means no car then!

You can own and run a car I have done for the past 15 years. As a visitor on a visitors visa that's no more than 30 days its ok. Once you go outside the 30 day visa a different set of rules apply.

Check with your insurance company too. My brother who is visiting can use our car with his UK license but been advised to have his flight ticket copy in the car. As he is not the owner he is covered by the car's insurance

Re: Owning a car
Can I ask if the trnc driving licence is valid abroad and if so for how long? Is it for more than 30 days which seems to be the situation here?

Re: Owning a car
But a UK one only 30 days here
will need to find out if an international driving permit is valid for more than 30 somehow

Re: Owning a car
Just revisiting this, what do you make of this statement? Does it mean if you own a property and are given 90 days then you would be covered. You would still be classed as a visitor as you wouldn't have residency?
Or if you were given thirty days, you would still have the additional 30 day window,??
Thoughts and interpretation please?

Any opinions on my previous post? I have tried to ask the department of transport, but nothing yet.

My interpretation is: -
"Your guess is as good as mine"
I don't think that you should rely on anyone else's guess either!

Re: Owning a car
Article 45 paragraph 3 definitely refers to getting residency (temporary or otherwise), a work permit etc - anything beyond the 30/60/90 entry 'visa' you get at the airport/crossing.
