Cost of living - excuse fort 'rip offs'?

Recently bought two new armchairs from a shop 'frequented by ex-pats/foreigners '.

Having cats, asked how much to make 2 sets of removeable covers for each chair. After paying a deposit for the chairs, some days later given a quote for the covers as 40000TL! More than the two chairs cost. Asking for an explanation, "well it takes so long, difficult job"....etc, cheaper to recover they said. Didn't sound right to me. Another shop quoted 1500TL to make each removeable cover. Bit of a difference me thinks! from 6000 TL to 40000TL

I know there has been many discussions about rising costs relating to food & restaurants, but as some have said, local suppliers are kicking the *^*^*&^ out of this, so please be careful and vote with your feet.

BTW the minimum wage commission met recently and recommended a 23% increase, but the employers only want 18%; whichever is accepted standby for further increases, in fact some supermarkets have already started the increases it seems

This last week I went to a well known supermarket on the main road in Alsancak. there was a large display of Mateus Rose wine on offer at 65TL. There was also some bottles at a higher price. So I put some of the 65TL bottles into my trolley. When I got to the check out I told the cashier, This wine is on special offer. She nodded and proceeded to use the till. I stopped her and asked about the special offer wine. It had gone through at 97 or 98 TL without her saying a word. She correctly called for help and off the pair of them went to the display. They came back and 'said it had been mis priced' and put it through at 65TL !!! Do check our receipts when you pay, prices are not always what they say on the shelf or displays.

Why not bring stretch covers from the UK. You can get most shapes and sizes now. Just an idea.

Not only shops already putting prices up. Went to one of my favourite seaside restaurants for lunch on Thursday and all the prices have been increased by around 20tl eadh. We joked that tourist season is upon us, but this is a particularly well patronised place!

Kerry, thanks didn't know that. Might not be cat proof enough with our lot we have - use the strongest 'duck' fabric I can find!

This is an interesting quote.

Notwithstanding the economies of scale fast food restaurants enjoy, they are a business, do emply people, pay rent, utilities etc & are entitled to make a profit. How can people not see that a burger, bun & chips not be cheaper to reproduce at home? Ditto pizzas & fried chicken etc. Yes it’s not as convenient but it has to be cheaper & not beyond most home cooks. We knock up pizzas at home far better than those sold out here at a fraction of the cost
