renewing passports

I've just discovered that my passport runs out next year.
I've been told I can apply for it online, but has anyone else done this, and do you have to send your passport back to them.
I'm in a bit of a flummox really, don't know what the best thing is to do. Any ideas peoples!

why not look at the UK government web site, I,m sure all your questions will be answered there.

My opinon is that you can apply on line and use a UK address for son / daughter then ask them to DHL it to you here.

OR fly to UK and do it in one day then fly back , did this for my wife passport .

I have in the past had my passport sent to DHL in the South and collected it there.

Note: North Cyprus is not on the list of countries for living abroad

DHL can be sent to Dagli Insurance in Karaoglanoglu. Have used them twice. Much easier as DHL knows there will be someone in the office all day and you don't have to hang around on the off chance.

I’ve used them too, very efficient. You can do it online, it’s not that difficult but there are people such as Capital Insurance who will do it for you. No you don’t have to return your passport & I’d suggest not throwing it away either. Some important things that you put that passport number down on might come back to haunt you so being able to show that old passport might prove useful

Enjoying The Sun. Absolutely correct re hanging on to old passports. Last year I was able to retrieve some money that was still in a defunct account in the old HSBC just because it was the current one 20 years ago. In the days when you could smile and not look straight at the camera. Oh Happy Days.

I have found renewing online very simple but always been in the position to ask someone to return/ send my old passport from the UK. All done very quickly, updates literally daily. DHL once with them I could track too.
But 10 years ago when I renewed via the uk , filled in the form and someone took back and then sent to a relative, I was pulled aside in the uk asking why my passport was not registered leaving the country.

Just confirming your comment....so no longer any need to return passport if using the new online system?

I believe you have to get a digital photo and upload it to the online application.
If you apply by post you have to send the old passport with your application.

I renewed mine 3 years ago and Head Office’s about 18 months ago and no you don’t. That’s not to say they won’t upgrade/improve the system and make it worse so that you have to!
If memory serves they ask you to destroy your old passport but as I said above you might regret that so keep hold of it.

Did ours on line 2 years ago, sent it back as requested or they dont proceed with your New passport until you do...

They send new passport here to your address via DHL.... old passport comes back within a few days....

KEEP old passport you might need it until, you update new passport at Immigration.
We still have old ones just in case.....

Interesting this. When trying to renew online you have to pick a country you live in! Great if you live in Taiwan a country not recognised by the UK, or The Occupied Palestinian Territories - Gaza or The Occupied Palestinian Territories - Jerusalem and the West Bank. But if you live in the Occupied Turkish Territories - Republic of Cyprus (TRNC) then there is nothing there for you to put down?? I have done this twice now but 10 years apart and can never remember what I put - lol.

Anyway, the interesting bit comes from the change in residency laws - it looks like as a renter, over 60, I will be able to apply for an extended residency permit the length of which will be reliant upon the length of time I have left on my rental agreement? I have no doubt that it will also include the requirement to have the remaining validity of my current passport brought into that equation as well - that would make sense to me?

So my passport runs out in 2026, rental agreement runs out in 2027 so I should be able to get 2 years? The next application will be the tricky bit as my new passport will then run out in 2036 and I will have a new rental agreement that will run out in 2031 to allow me to get a 5 year permit. However, my wife's passport runs out in 2027!!! So she can get the first 2 years same as me but then she will only get 1 year at the next application until she renews her passport?

Easy answer would be for her to renew her passport the same time as I renew mine but as far as I know - you can only renew your passport up to 6 months early?? Has anyone ever lost/destroyed/had stolen their passport and on application for replacement ended with a brand new passport that runs from the date of loss for 10 years? Just a thought as there is nothing on Gov.UK that covers this.

I seem to remember that I was once asked for my old passport which was applicable when I bought my house; I think it was at Immigration for residency.

When you send old passport back do you have to send a SAE to get it posted back or does this happen automatically

From what I recall, Passport has to be returned asap along with all relevant paperwork. These go in an envelope with your individual code on, ie PZ 12345 you get this when applying. Old passport must be returned, we sent back with someone who kindly recorded delivery, you can keep track then. This has to be in passport office, before new one is even started to be processed. You will be getting email reminder until all received.
Then they send back everything in two batches via DHL.
Use Turkey as country as you would any post coming here.
Remember to put your post code.
It’s quite a simple process if you follow the online instructions.

The overseas passport fee includes a return fee by courier to you - 1 package with new passport and another with the old cancelled one; as many said, keep the old one. UK is somewhat unusual in issuing a new passport (ID) number every 10 years, while in north and south Cyprus your ID never changes from birth!

A word of caution UK passport applications use two different forms for those overseas and those in the UK; if you are overseas when renewing and use a UK address, if HMPO find this out, the will cancel your application with no refund. You can only apply with a UK address if your are physically in the UK at the time of the application- pays 'yer money and takes yer choice'; also having it sent on by friends/family from the UK, means if it is lost then you will have to apply again, and explain the loss. Using the proper overseas process insures your passport when being sent by HMPO should it go missing.

Do check your new passport that all the details are correct as they will correct errors for free within so many days of it being issued.
