My stepson recently completed probate, although only involved a property. It cost £3500 and took about 10 months.

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't probate based on the value of the property concerned and time based purely and simply as to the speed that your solicitor keeps on pushing the relevant Government departments.

Recently helped a friend with probate, the joint vehicle and another vehicle in sole name. About 16 visits to court and once submitted it took the 2 weeks we were advised. Very stressful for one who is suffering a loss on what seems to be easy. The will, lodged with the court stated very clearly who the items were left too but the paper trail seemed to be endless.
The joint names on the vehicle, most advised to do so the other one can still drive it but it can not be sold. It would of been far simpler if once the will is opened a piece of paper the vehicle registration department accept to change the name of the vehicle's kocan but no guarantor's, muhtar confirmation, legal letters etc. Years ago I was advised even though the house is in my name I can only sell if my husband is alive otherwise permission from his brother, father, any children he has if he doesn't clearly state legally it's mine. I could never understand it but now I do! Even this I would now be concerned they could overturn his wishes but a marriage certificate I hope would help.
I also understand why one employs an advocate:) fine if the estate is worth it

Hi Mollie
A lot will depend on the value and, if any, the complications of the estate. And of course the solicitor.
I helped a friend complete just recently and it was a rather complicating case. Total cost was 4K. However it all went quite quickly and the solicitor did save us no court visits in fact she did it all. However as I say it depends on how complicating it is and the size of the estate. All in all we were very satisfied with the solicitors dealings. We have used her for many years now . Tanky
