I've looked into many products claiming to obviate the use of chlorine, they nearly /all add the caveat that occasionally chlorine dosage is required. Also some products react with hair, especially dyed hair turning green when copper is present. I've no idea where you'd find these products but be sure to read reviews from real people.

It is.... don't

We had salt water system from day 1, it still needs dosing with chlorine from time to time. It was a nightmare too. Salt water systems have their own raft of problems - not least is corrosion that salty air has around anything ferric.

I had it all ripped out and use the minimalist approach with chlorine. Used sparingly with regular good cleaning practices ensures pleasant swimming environment.

The greatest testament for pool water suitability is that birds, dragonflies, bees and pond-skaters choose our pool to drink from...

Totally agree with your last sentence Groucho. I can also add t your list the very occasional snake. We are on the edge of the ravine so I guess they can smell the water. No harm done, he/she had good slurp and off back down the side of the ravine.
