You know ok in day but at night it really hurts. In this heat you would think they would find a way out. It’s dangerous to really old people. A killer even. How do you in press this on the powers to be. Don’t suppose they have power cuts

Yes they seem to be doing their rotational cuts again without telling us. Think that during the night we won't notice, sorry Kibtek, woke up absolutely melting (thought I'd put it politely). At least gives us the times again like they did a couple of years ago, we can then be prepared.

Yes we just been off 2 hours. Yea bit of notice would be nice. Even being told they were at it again would have helped

Had several power cuts this week in daytime, for about 30 to 45 mins each time. Time to seriously think about getting off grid power. With plans to build 10,000 flats in Gecitkale over next few years, it's only going to get worse. What are they thinking???

Bought a 'smart' fridge freezer with ice maker a year or so ago, but not so 'smart' as after an hour of a power cut/outage it needs to be manually reset or lose all frozen products. If that's not bad enough to be locked into ones home I've just found out that after an eight month wait for a Police appointment to renew residency, the original date given falls on a Saturday when they are closed!? Another curfew hindering people to travel!
Something is very amiss about the current Government policies on how to treat their own TC's and the foreign residents that have financially contributed to TRNC.

Apparently, if you have a Saturday appointment then you can go on Friday.

Sonar. What sort of off the grid system are you thinking about? It would be great if we were allowed to have batteries with solar panels as that would really help.

I already have solar panels feeding to the grid. Would like to add atleast one battery with inverter to cover powercuts. Just been waiting for prices to come down.

Hi Sonar
I thought it was illegal to have batteries in the system over here. Having batteries is looked upon at harnessing electric and I was informed it was illegal. Please can you tell me if you have any info on this that it makes it legal to install a battery, batteries in the solar lower system. Much appreciated. Tanky.

I didn't know that. But if constantly getting powercuts, then it would not stop me. At moment just looking into cheapest options.

Solar with battery back up is around double the price of net metering system
the price I was quoted was £7,500. for net metering and the same system with battery's was £14,800
I'm leaving now to go find myself....if I arrive before I get back, please ask me to wait!

I have friend near me who had the battery system installed about 7 years ago and all he needed was the money. However, I think there are a few hooks to jump through now as it means you are depriving Kibtek of income if you supply yourself!!

Trouble is the batteries don’t last long. They are only guaranteed for 2 years if they honour their warranty and £300 times a touch it’s not as cheap as you think. I recon that they should come out and let us know what is going to happen so we can make up our mind in which way we turn. I bought a 27kva years back before they bought the new then turbines 14 years ago and sold it as we was promised NO MORE POWER CUTS. That lasted about two years. I sold it being nieve lost about two k . Do I buy another or what. Please if anyone knows someone in higher positions tell us what the f..k is going on.

Just sent message to my solar installer. Will let you know what he says about adding battery to current solar system.
point is: an application to kibtek /ministery includes many info, but also an electric plan. eg, x panels in series- this or that inverter- voltages, breakers, fuses, cabel lenght and diameters, the lot. then you get a permission to install and you must install as in the plan stated. kibtek comes, checks the system and you get the YEK belge, the permission to feed incl netmetering. thats basically a (20 year) contract. if you do any alterations in that installation you need permisssion (eg, panel or inverter broken) , otherwise your contract may become void.

if you want a battery buffered solar system (off grid system) with a grid inverter , but without netmetering, then you must isolate this system from kibteks grid = the same way as you would install a generator, with a change over switch. (there is another possibility to avoid grid feed .. but not now... you could have the switch automated... )

2 year warranty batteries for 300 dollars are usually rubbish. eg, the very common GEL 12 Volt, 200 Ah from ch***
the experts here calculate your needs wrong, because they have no knowledge about batteries and their behaviour under charge and discharge conditions, combined with battery tech, cycle life vs dod, aso.
do you think they read a manufacturers datasheet?
do you think these manufacturers give relevant and true data about their products? simple: no.
they want the job: you need 4 batteries, they sell you 2.. you need 16, they sell you 8. ...and, result: the batteries are f**** up after a year... you push it to 2 years. double the amount of batteries could mak 6 or 8 years.
(only as an example)

it makes a lot of a difference whether you want to cover the one or other power cut, or you want to run your house most of the time off grid. it makes a difference whether power cuts are once a week or every day. it makes difference whether you want to run a TV or basically the whole house.
to discuss part time (back up) or full time (solar or not) off grid systems and come with proper solutions takes time...
many people with no knowledge around... even elelctricians with university degrees often do not really have a clue what they sell...

this is not true.
what do you mean with "harnessing"?
if you isolate your "electric producing system" (which can be a generator or a PV panel system with batteries) from kibteks electric feed in, you basically can install whatever you want.
you may did not ask "correctly", but what kibtek means is: kibtek does not agree to a "non permitted feed in" to the kibtek network, even if you do not want money for any excess power you may would supply. wrong off grid installations can be dangerous for eg, maintenance workers.
in general: what you do in your (from kibtek isolated) house is your business. practically spoken: install a big changeover just after the e meter and go.
a "permitted feed in" are, eg, installations under the law from 2014, "solar net metering", which requires an application procedere..
as i explained: if you do have a solar netmetering system, you are not permitted to connect this to a battery system.
the installation must remain as applied for and finally from kibtek approved. (which is a pity, as there are solutions to avoid a possible grid feed... )
you "only" can have a back-up battery system which kicks in during a power cut. if you want additionally solar panels, you need to set up a 2nd PV area, which does not feed the grid.
also the installation of DC solar poolpumps are "off grid systems": (additional) solar panels run a pump, which do not feed the grid.
permission needed: no.

Hi, no.
here .. "to my solar system" (which is a net metering system i guess)
that is correct. i explained why: kibtek fears many dangers in unprofessional installations and "feed in fraud".
but, you can add batteries and a "battery inverter for a backup system to your house... the charge needed for the batteries would be done from kibtek, or, basically, from your credits from the solar system, if you have any.

and you could add solar panels for your back up system, which could be as big as a small stand alone system..
your net metering system keeps feeding in... and the credits you save until you really need it (for the use in the house and for charging the batteries again).

I think 2 years ago we had a 4 days of 1 hour on 6 hours off, we bought a generator, people said why? A cable us coming from Turkey. I maybe selfish but I am not going to be cold or hot in my own home. Only one room needs to be cold or hot. Very grateful for it but to be honest as I work the running hours are still quite low.

Alsancak (our side) keeps going off for about 40 mins, 3 or 4 days a week. I think is workmen installing mains electricity into a couple of nearby developments as its always about 5.30onwards. Hardly dare say it, but nothing in the hours. Have a generator wired to the house and I'm sorry of the noise upsets any neighbours, but hey, I paid so I'm using.
