If you didn't see the recent BBC report on the TR of NC ...
Maybe you saw Chris Morris's report earler this week, and if so I apologise for boring you. However, if you've not seen it, then I recommend you click on the link below.
In the accompanying article Morris writes of the 1974 events "The stalemate in Cyprus has been frozen in place since 1974, when a Greece-backed coup prompted a Turkish military intervention in the north of the island." - So yes, he gives the reason for the Turkish action and calls it an "intervention", not an "invasion" - Let's hope that his version is not a one-off.
Together with the more tolerant TCs that Morris interviewed, the whole report shows the north in a very welcome light. For those of you who want to read the full BBC report, you should click on this link:

The accompanying television clip doesn't include the above quote, but nevertheless is well worth watching.

Liz, maybe the GCs have asked for it to be blocked in Europe ... and I'm only half joking when I say that - here in China there is no problem opening it.foodie wrote:Sorry Ian the link did not work for me.

Thanks for that will have a look later. No direct criticism Ian as everyone labours this but I think people spend far too much time worrying about intervention and invasion. Splits too many hairs as I think realistically Turkey intervened but they had to invade to do it. Kind of like operation overlord where the allies invaded Northern France, it does not have to be negative.

I agree Jonnie - the actual military action was indeed an invasion - for me the biggest positive development in Morris's report was him giving the reason for Turkey's action. Up until now, the foreign media have normally reported the 1974 events merely as being a "Turkish invasion", which certainly puts Turkey in a bad light.Jonnie wrote:Thanks for that will have a look later. When you do have time, do look at the clip - I think you'll agree the general tone of Morris's report is very positive.

A very good, well-balanced report. Nice to see someone in the Beeb acknowledging the existence of the TRNC!

This report was also on Radio 4, pretty much word for word.
Radio 4 seems to delve a bit deeper into facts when putting reports together.

I think you'll find that the "delver" in both cases was Chris Morris - it's just that the World Service and Radio 4 are more likely to allow more time for the reports.CatalkoyChris wrote:This report was also on Radio 4, pretty much word for word.
