UK style GP practise opening soon.
Good news for us all, a new GP practise is opening around the 20th of April in Girne. The surgery is centrally positioned in Girne and is wheelchair friendly. Registration forms will be available soon. The docs will also be doing home visits which is a boom for anyone with young children and of course the elderly.
Dr Ozgun already making his presence known around the community with a visit this morning to Chateau Lambousa market and he will be at the Lapta festival tomorrow helping us with the First Aid for a wee while.
I for one wish them all the luck in the world with their new venture.
Chris

Hope it's better than here in the UK where you are required to "phone on the day" which entails spending hours dialing - to find the engaged tone and when you finally get through there are no "slots" except for emergencies.

I apologise Deniz, but I objected to the negative comment made about a venture that could well be a very positive development for expats living in the Girne area. I wish all the best to Dr Özgün and his colleagues.Deniz1 wrote:

I hope it's a success, it will be worth it even if there is just someone who can point you in the right direction for who you need to see. I ignore a lot of ailments because I really don't know what sort of doctor I might need to see. So well done Chris and everyone who has worked hard to set this up.

Someone posts a helpful comment then the critics start up. I think Chris sometimes wonders why she bothers after reading comments on another forum.

I agree Deniz1, lets keep this thread positive and informative. Dr. Ozgun is a great doctor, and Chris is marvelous for always trying to help us all. Good luck to this new venture.

Re: UK style GP practise opening soon.
I think it osunds a great idea. I am hoping to go to see the Doctor this week and get all the details to share. I personally think this could be of great hlep to ex pats because the services are similar to a GP in U.K. As to whether it will be affordable remains to be seen, but in principle it looks a wonderful improvement on things out here.

Marion, A visit to the surgery will set you back 70tl which I think is very reasonable, that is between 9am and 6pm after those hours it will be 90tl. Can't remember what the cost of a home visit is at the mo.
Also would like to thank Dr Ozgun for helping us on the First Aid post today fortunately we had no patients!

Guess Lapta was an Accident Free Zone today. Great!
that 70tl is less than Alan has to pay to see the specialist at the hospital, who seems to do little other than say 'yes' and write another 'script. No records of anything, which is quite disturbing. I will certainly try to get Alan to sign up (and me too) as it is reassuring to know that there is someone hwo can speka English and tlel you what might be wrong, an d even more reassuring to know that i fone cnanot drive oneself to the doctor, he will come to you. that must be worth an extra bit of cash.

Pleasure to meet you at last nurseawful and Dr Ozgun good luck with the new venture.
Chris I think it is good that they have asked you to join the team, because you know about the British psyche on health care and will be able to advise the local clinicians.

Good luck with this. I am impressed with the price too. I have only had to use a doctor once here, the fact that you have to pay makes you think twice about going with ailments that tend to clear after a few days anyway. I think they should introduce a flat fee in the UK too and cut out the malingerers who just want a sicknote!
We are quick to knock the NHS in the UK but on a recent visit I made a Nurse Appointment for a health check. The phone was answered instantly and I had an appointment for the next day. It was noted that my old surgery's waiting room was full of people from other EU countries which has no doubt put a huge strain on the system.

Re: UK style GP practise opening soon.
We have always been pleased with the Doctors here & have found that apart from some in Lefkosa State Hospital they invariably speak excellent English.
The wonderful Dr Silem has been acting as a UK type GP for several years now at the Green Clinic as I am sure a lot of you are aware.
Good luck to this new venture.

Re: UK style GP practise opening soon.
My wife finds Dr Silem OK. I went to a doctor near the school in Girne, can't remember her name, with an eye problem. She said there was nothing wrong with them but proceeded to give me a prescription. I called my UK practice and described the symptoms to a nurse, she gave a likely diagnosis but could not confirm without seeing. I went to the Girne eye clinic, they confirmed that diagnosis, treated it then gave me an eye test resulting in completely the wrong prescription and some bizzare instructions for wearing the glasses. Use when at the computer, watching TV and driving.
Some are wise and some otherwise.....

Royalcorpsoftransport.
You can register by popping into the surgery next week or we will be at Chateau Lambousa on Saturday morning and you can register then. Phone number for the clinic is 0392 444 99 11 (easy to remember number) The clinic is situated coming from Lapta go straight through the Lefkosa roundabout or if coming on the by-pass turn right as if heading for Bellapais . Just after the Electrokur shop take a left and it is straight in front of you about 20 yards down that road. It is ground floor and wheelchair friendly.
Chris
p.s. They don't officially open until around the 23rd of the month.
