property problems North Cyprus
Nearly everybody, whatever nationality comes to North Cyprus for a better life. It is beautiful, charming and safe. However, many people are leaving the Island because, it is no longer the place of their dreams, they have fallen foul of builders, fed up of powercuts, , increasing cost of living. Many of us have watched our savings dwindle to nothing worth having due to the exchange rate ...all of this leaves a bitter taste in our mouths. What people in their 60's and 70's even their 80's don't want ..... is the 'I'm alright Jacks telling them if they don't like it ...do one!!! Easier said than done for most of us, so many people have problems with builders who they trusted. thousands of us don't know how we are going to pay the exorbitant taxes, thousands of us can't sell or are not allowed to sell, Many people are now saying they will just walk away, many people can't sleep at night for worrying that they are going to lose their homes. So I say to the people who have already got their deeds, who inherited property, who have a Kimlik Card. Please don't be so self-righteous, because by the grace of God it could have been you ! Hopefully, the Government will realise that they are being unfair to Foreigners and lighten the load. I don't often post but ......

Re: property problems North Cyprus
Seems a lot of support for this thread but I read most posts relating to the recent law and haven't seen the one where anybody is telling people to do one? For me you are lashing out at the wrong people. I didn't also realise it's thousands of UK expats in this position. Since I came here the advice on kibkom and the older UK expat forum spanning more than 15 years was always to rent first then buy a property with deeds. I didn't always follow that advice myself but I was prepared to take ownership if it went wrong . I certainly would not start lashing out at other expats because of my mistake. Yes the country has caused all these issues by it's it's lax laws and corrupt builders . I have a much higher tax bill now because I didn't act . I have a shared deed property that I can't sell. I'm not blaming anybody else except myself . I could have taken deeds at one point for only 1 % tax now that's gone thats my fault . I don't know people's individual predicaments but for instance if you didn't take the deeds when available at a much lower tax one has to take ownership of that imo and it's certainly not the fault of other expats. If you got conned by a builder nobody on this forum is laughing at you telling you to do one the advice by many posts offeted on this forum is to only buy a house with deeds . That's why I find this post and support for it perplexing . I don't see how it's spot on at all.

Re: property problems North Cyprus
I don't think anyone on here is telling anyone to do one, and as you say all here seem to be supportive. Unfortunately there are some people who gloat on others misfortunes. Whilst I haven't had this personally, have heard of another person being told just to go back to UK, or wherever they came from. Easier said than done when they've lived here for over 20 years and have no ties back in the old country now, and no chance of ever getting title deeds.
I think the new law with protections for buyers is good, and should have been in place decades ago. However, it does come with flaws and is causing people major worries, particularly with the short time scale for those with pretty old contracts. It should never have been rushed through without thought about various predicaments that people now find themselves in.
A case has been submitted to the Supreme Court, so we will have to wait and see if anything comes out of that, but it might be a case of clutching at straws.

That's horrible Gates. Must admit that I've always been welcomed, treated with respect and made great friends.
Thanks so much for that article Reyntj. I heard about court case over the weekend, but nothing in print, other than on FB, so wouldn't be posting. So good to see that there is some sort of a backlash, we shall just have to wait and see the outcome and if it makes a difference to us foreigners.

Another new article on the legal challenge.
"Hakkı, who explained that there were problems with the regulations regarding floor alliances and the term of taxes to be paid in the Real Estate Acquisition Law, mentioned that the current law had negative effects on the construction sector"

Thanks Reyntj. Having problems with Google Translate this morning, will try again later.
It's obvious that it will have a negative effect on the construction industry, and indeed the wider economy. If people don't buy property, they won't be buying the likes of white goods and furniture to fill their properties for a start, and so on to wider economy of shops and restaurants, gardeners, handymen, plumbers, list goes on. There really has been no thought given to this, just the usual knee jerk reaction. If their aim was to stop foreign construction, they surely could have gone about it in a better way. If they don't want to attract more foreigners, that's entirely up to them, but not punish the ones already here. They are driving us out in droves by what I am hearing, and I fear that I may be another casualty.

Re: property problems North Cyprus
I just saw that noyanlar in iskele are now offering off plan without a deposit ..and 70 month interest free payments .+ White goods plus a discount on the price ..
These big local companies have been driving a big part of the economy for some it has come to a sudden halt ..part of the sales pitch is that punters can buy into an appreciating mkt now by buying off plan ..
Thats a pretty hard sell now ....
You are right about the white goods !!! Shops will.be just replacing old ones from now on ..

I think as the numbers grow we could have a farewell party, there are more people than you think, but don't want to come clean yet. I'm still trying to sort out a parcelisation problem with my Ukrainian neighbours.

Lots of our friends have left. A friend of mine is friendly with an elderly lady who used to hold knitting sessions, last year she had 13 coming, now down to four.

BB, will there be anyone left to turn the lights out after the party? I have been told this affects thousands of us, it's going to be some party.
MtC, lots of my friends and others have left too, remaining ones might be with us at the party.

I have taken solace from the legal challenges lodged against the NC government. Will they stop the clock ticking on the threat of massive fines and property loss, though? Due to the new laws against shared title ownership and being legally unable to apply for PTP, I have seriously considered demolishing my villa and walking away if I'm going to lose it anyway.

Civil war in the UK and moving to Victorian style poverty & growing inequality knife & drug crime violent crime & theft & bulgary every city littered with homeless and crack/spice/heroine addicts no go areas mass uncontrolled immigration huge fuel bills and council taxes .unruly disrespectful entitled youth. Too many scroungers playing the system. Spineless politicians and woke policies . Men dressed as women women dressed as men some with no gender at all...
The rich few are getting richer and asset prices are rising beyond inflation this will continue because it doesn't matter which government is in power as the rich are pulling the strings and holding all the cards ..middle class will no longer be a thing ...just rich and poor.
Good luck
If you are a cross dressers who is eligible for benefits especially if you can play the asylum card . Give it a go .

Reyntj. I know things are not perfect in the UK, but I have to say that your description of the UK is a tad over the top. There is no 'civil war' or Victorian-style poverty (which is what exactly?). I don't argue about the rest you say, but at least we do have a parliament, laws, and courts that can, in the main, be relied on, which, unfortunately, I can't say about NC.

I said moving to Victorian poverty as predicted by this economist who was for a time citi banks no 1 trader making a series of correct calls on the UK economy .
https://youtu.be/8_Vgdl-NqS4?si=cT-kT1QEfJCDWWzk
I had been watching this guy so that's where the rant came from
.
It does come across as shocking but he has a campaign to tax the rich In the UK and prevent widening inequality
Last time I went to.uk.i was shocked by the number of homeless and drug addicts hanging about something they simply don't tolerate on the streets in trnc.
A bit tongue in cheek but at least in trnc we can all participate in corruption with bribery etc and who you know ..
It's just the rich and powerful in the uk who can get involved in the corruption...
if you think 2 tier policing doesn't exist and the UK.isnt corrupt that's your call..
It's just better hidden in the UK and only open to the few.
I did put all the bad things in one post . If you can't afford to live in a nice area in the UK you.might be jumping from.the frying pan into the fire. I fully understand that a major attraction of coming here was the low compared cost of living for many and now that's gone but it'salways been corrupt here and imo uk has declined in many areas over the last decade plus. For many the health service is a big factor especially as you get older .

Yes that is brought up as a reason to not tax the rich but the citi bank trader argues you can still
Tax all there UK assets and they are illiquid so they mostly can't sell up.

I suggest that anyone with issues over property laws and taxes joins The Foreign Residents Association (TFR) who, (unlike the BRS) are making representations to the Ministers on their members' behalf and may get things changed.

TFR meet every Friday 2pm at Blue Song restaurant on Lapta strip. Caroline Houghton is usually there to listen to your issues, answer questions and help with residency etc. You will also find more info on their Facebook page.
