frugal190, I've been trawling through the Ads for similar holidays elsewhere in the MED (excluding the coast of Spain - yuk) and you are so right.

Try Greece like the Mainland Turks have been doing, cheaper.
Choose your spouse, friend, relative, in difficult days. On a good day, no one shows their purity.

Im not sure that will be the case.

Last summer we went to 4 balkan capital cities.kosovo skopje pristina & tirana & ohrid a lake town in macedonia. These are amongst the cheapest places in europe. Ohrid kosovo pristina restaurant prices the same as here. Skopje cheaper and tirana the cheapest
We where airbnb so went the supermarkets.

In tirana the cheapest place the supermarkets where very expensive more so than here...not tourist supermarkets either...

Trnc hotels are busy and all inclusive and have an all year never ending supply of casino customers.

As for self catering you only have to go on airbnb and see for accomodation it can be as cheap as anywhere here. Some items in the supermarkets may be a little pricey but no different to other islands..its unlikely to deter tourists coming for a 1 or 2 week holiday. Many people wont care and are use to paying similar prices for restaurants in other destinations. Yes a benidorm or similar is cheaper and you can find a weatherspoon or similar in the uk but trnc is like now an average price for restaurants compared to uk and europe

The folk it is affecting is expats who came here when it was cheap and now isnt and budget focused holiday makers. Im sure there is some evidence that making prices higher will appeal to another economic group of travellers.

Yes, and now that Sir Kneeler and Rachel from accounts have crashed the Uk economy it will only get worse. The pound has started to lose value and without a change of direction this is likely to continue.

How so?
Beaches aren’t that great, the food is mediocre, there isn’t much to see and any unspoilt appeal is disappearing by the week.

EnjoytheSun. Agree about the beaches particularly as many of them are pricey now. Sad to say, the food which I loved many years ago, is boring and samey (unlike Turkey which is great) In Antalya and many other large towns and small villages, its is possible to have a meal that isn't bulked up with rice and a chips. Cooks in the kitchens are virtually all referred to a Chefs, which is a joke. Presentation is better as well, even in a small road side cafe. What unspoiled appeal?. It is being ruined. Its almost impossible to see any orchards etc., and when you do, you can bet your bottom dollar, a month later there will be a huge display of "luxury" properties soon to be built, Upmarket council estates, costing a minimum of 644,000 GBP, tiny pools and close enough to shake hands from upstairs balconies. I have one just down the road. Who is going to want to holiday in a concrete jungle?

Try dubai limassol. My point exactly ..people who where attracted here because it was cheap wont like it here any more..as they probably wouldnt like limassol or dubai which are even more expensive than here ...there are many different punters attracted to these destinations.

Ive met an iranian estate agent who sells property in dubai and iskele to the same customer base. Im not saying iskele is dubai. Just certain people seek these new apartments. One mans meat is another mans murder.

Most of the locals i know dont want an old home in a village etc they want modern housing. Ive never thought the food was great but when it was c£5 for chicken sis & free humus etc it was more appealing.

It’s never been a foodie paradise but it was cheap & plentiful, now it doesn’t even tick those boxes. I’m just struggling to see any tourist appeal now they have lost the price advantage they had. People who are investing over here obviously can see something I’m missing

What's wrong with council estates, I grew up on one and spent some of the happiest years of my life there?

As did I and was also happy, but I wouldn’t pay £500,000 + to move back there

Crime is not confined solely to council/social housing estates.

Trnc hotels are busy and all inclusive and have an all year never ending supply of casino customers.
Which add little/zero to the local economy.

You also have to take with a very large pinch of salt casino/hotel occupancy rates they give out.
Much of the casino business is Turkish mainlanders flying in for the weekend. Maybe Friday/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon or possibly as long as Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon and yes it isn’t seasonal.

But the operators will tell you that the hotels run at ludicrous rates of occupancy, I’ve been quoted 95% by someone high up with the largest operator.

I said I doubt that any hotel in the world runs at that occupancy over a year. But he assured me it was true.

We then agree their business model of getting casino players in for the weekend, an extended 4 day weekend at most.

I then asked where they found their extremely patient hotel guests that would rent the rooms on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, get chucked out early Friday for the casino players & then be welcomed with open arms for another 3 day stay?

Assuming you don’t fill those rooms for what is 40% of the week then how do you achieve a 95% occupancy?

At which point I was told I don’t understand how it works out here or the Turkish ways :)

Do understand maths and human nature though.

I don’t know why they keep building hotels, well I can guess, but the numbers don’t stack up.

The tourism figures are apparently up but if you speak to any independent restaurant or bar there aren’t the tourists there were.

Someone isn’t telling the truth and I think it might be the restaurants and bar owners just before they close down

Tourist figures up??? You realise of course that if you walk across the border from the South , visit the Bandabulya at the end of the street in Lefkosa ,have a bite to eat, buy a few nick nacks, (all priced in Euro) stroll around the streets for maybe a couple of hours and then wander back. You'll then be registered as a tourist. , BTW , we had to stand our ground when we went, in order pay in TL for our coffee and cake. Granted that was a couple of years back, but I doubt if they have changed.

Ah yes, THE PARTY! Dear old George. The problem here is, we have more than one party, so that in theory makes us Democratic.
