Arikli's sarcastic response regarding complaints about new traffic fines
Apparently some groups have complained about the severity of the new traffic fines, in that people can't afford them. Arikli's response is spot on and amusing (to me anyway).

Arıklı’s Irony: “Let’s Give Flowers to Speeders, Plaques to Drunk Drivers, and Cocaine to Drug Users”
Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı responded sarcastically to criticism that newly introduced traffic fines are excessively harsh, suggesting, “Let’s quickly amend the law again and give flowers to those who speed, plaques to those who drive under the influence, and cocaine to drug users. Let’s abolish all fines.”
Arıklı took to social media to address objections raised by certain groups against the increased penalties, particularly arguments citing poor road conditions, inadequate lighting, and the lack of public transportation. He criticized such reasoning, saying, “So, should we just continue speeding, driving under the influence, and using mobile phones while driving?”
Mocking the objections further, he remarked, “Fine. In that case, let’s change the law again as soon as possible—let’s reward speeders with flowers, honor drunk drivers with plaques, and give 5 grams of cocaine to drug users. And until these roads are fixed, let’s abolish all penalties.”
Arıklı’s post sarcastically suggested that those who drink or use drugs before driving do so out of despair over road conditions. Concluding his statement, he sardonically apologized to opponents of the law, particularly the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Shopkeepers and Artisans (KTEZO), saying, “I made a mistake. I personally apologize to KTEZO and all those affected and who will be affected.”

Wonderful, not quite the same as UK irony but fairly close. Which brings me to tailgating, when we moved here 20 years ago, it was rife and then seemed to wain.. Sadly, now that we have all the stretches of double lanes, with large concrete slabs, tailgating seems to have returned together with flashing headlights during the day if you don't happen to brake the speed limits at every opportunity. The worst offenders are the taxi drivers, who have always made up the laws as they go on, and White Van men.

Agree with the OP, it's a fitting response. I was amazed at the statement by one of the groups, that said the government should fix the roads before going after the working man wanting a beer - as if drinking and driving have to go hand in hand.

I have noticed the speed drops coming to roundabouts. A short distance from 50 to 30 and a long distance from 30 to the roundabout. Have tried sticking to the rules, but 30km is ridiculously very slow at that distance in a modern car. Very annoying, but guess those speed limits are implemented to stop some from carelessly shooting out at roundabouts at high speeds. In my opinion 50 to 40 would be more realistic, unless in a busy town center.
I believe most accidents are caused by drivers on phones. Why they can't put their mobiles on speaker or sync to their car radio is beyond me. I have noticed that nearly every other person I pass hold their mobile to their ear.
As for traffic light cameras, it's about time these were implemented.

Suspect you'll just have to pay up Gates. If it was taken by a fixed camera, I think there's somewhere in Lefkosa that you can get the film checked, but I really don't know anything about that, just heard about it. Expect you'll be paying more attention from now on though. Bit unfair though if you had slowed down, just not enough for the speed limit.
Regarding Arikli, well done him. If drivers (including myself) don't break the law, then there is no fine to pay. Am amazed that anyone thinks they have a right to drink a beer and drive, problem is that it isn't usually just one beer looking at the alcohol count in accidents.
Soner, even hands free on phones is distracting when driving, but better than holding a mobile. Agree that it would be good for traffic light cameras to be implemented. Excess speed, phones and drunk driving I think, are the main causes of accidents here.
