Third Party Insurance

I found out this morning that the government has put the minimum cost of third-party insurance at 5000tl.

I know this is still less than the UK, but the increase for me is 53% which is a big jump.

The other thing is more and more cars will be on the road with No Insurance.

I have heard of two instances of people being hit by drivers with No Insurance and in both occasions the Police would not get involved in insisting that the culprits pay for the damage.

All cars caught with No Insurance should be seized on the spot and held for 14 days and if a valid policy is not produced it's Sold or destroyed.

Sadly, what you say is correct. Also the third party insurance payouts are capped - which means serious damage is not properly covered regardless of fault. And comprehensive insurance is 2-3 times the price of the UK.

I'm hardly surprised that insurance has gone up, due to the ridiculously high amount of accidents here, as well as inflation. I've never had 3rd party, always fully comp, so not a clue what 3rd party cost in the first place. Again, no idea of what cost of insurance is now in UK, I do know that it used to be much less here, but the price suddenly jumped 2 or 3 years ago.

Are you sure about that?
As l understand it, a third party policy is mandatory here.
A fully comp policy does not include third part cover here.
To purchase a fully comp policy one must also purchase (be in possession of) a third party policy.
It’s an oddity l know, fully comp in UK includes a third party element, here not so.
Go check with your motor insurance broker.

Yikes! I had no clue about that and I honestly don't know. Am sure that my insurance broker will have kept me right on that though and I just haven't noticed. I'm due my renewal soon, so will be seeing insurance broker this week or next.

I bought a car and Third Party came with it. Insurance company would not supply Full Comp as car was 11 years old. Three days ago I had an accident (am not going into detail but witnesses said it was absolutely not my fault and nothing I could have done to avoid it) However police determined as she was motionless and and I was going quarter of a mile an hour or even less. it was entirely my fault. The usual crowd gathered and English, English, English was bandied about. Police said it was entirely my fault and I had to sign a form to the effect. I have to go to the garage where their car is being dealt with (no one can see a thing) and I have to pay all the work on my car . Not going into detail but its costly. Not going in to further correspondence. Sorry, just a word of warning if you're not local!!

It's worthwhile investing in a Dash cam nowadays.

Really sorry to hear that BB, I hope that you are ok.
Like snd, I've heard this before, and of certain people getting the blame, but things surprisingly change with the mention of a dashcam. It used to be lovely to drive about here, but nowadays it's a rare day not to see some idiotic driving and have to take evasive action. I absolutely hate driving here now, and avoid driving in the dark unless totally necessary.

Yes, third party is compulsory, you then choose to add fully comp. The former is usually charged in lira, and latter in pounds sterling. We have to go through the payment process for each one when paying by card.

Went to pick up car insurance yesterday. Yes I do have 3rd party as well as fully comp. Learn something new every day. Knew if it was compulsory as you said, I would be bound to have it, was just unaware. Slow learner, only been here 15 years.

I've only ever paid one fee, that I can remember, so obviously added together. I normally pay in TL. Been with the same agent for years and I trust them. Only problem I had yesterday was their machine didn't like my Chase card, but Revolut worked fine.

From my experience, fully comp charged in GBP and third party charged in TL. Two separate polices and each policy document provided in both Turkish and English languages.

If you were charged a single fee, in TL, may l ask how much you were charged please?

Also, do you have two copies of the policy, one in English and on in Turkish? The Turkish written policy is the only one recognised in law here.

The English written policy document, does it state “full comprehensive” or similar wording?

Thanks very much for the info.
I would be interested in getting a quote from your broker when time comes to renew vehicle insurance.
I have heard premiums have increased considerably and it may well pay to shop around, like for like cover of course.
