Re: Pork Pies
Following an 18 year search for pork pies in the TRNC I have reached the conclusion that the frozen ones you will find from time to time are not worth the effort. If you are looking for fresh (Not previously frozen) pies then good luck to you as I have never found a single pie that I could class as a traditional pork pie. There have been many attempts (including my wife's) at producing pork pies but they always fail on either the pastry or the filling - not a lot else they could fail on anyway - so I have always use Plan A to satisfy my needs.
Plan A - Visitors bringing pork pies from the UK with them! As part of the agreement over visiting ALL of our visitors bring with them pork pies which we either eat within the BBF date or if they have been very kind and brought to many, we will freeze the remainder. Over time I have found that I can successfully freeze a pie (or more) for up to 21 days but then have them hot instead of cold! I have had some sad failures over the years but very few indeed. The downside of this plan is the actual pie itself, as tastes change down the years the first choice of pie remained Pork Farms pies. Of recent times that has changed to Morrisons Caramelised Onion Latice Topped Pies, wonderful!!
Plan B - More recently I have found a Butcher in the South called McLoucas Butchers in Στέλιου Κυριακίδη, Xylotymvou 7510, which is a village close to Ormideia - the village where Lidl is close to Dhekelia! He makes his own pies including Pork Pies, sadly he uses the same pastry for his pork pies as all the other pies he makes - Chicken & Mushroom, Mince & Onion, Steak etc - but the filling is quite nice although not as good as pies from the UK. As an aside, his meat is first class and a reasonable price as well.
Plan C - Fly back to the UK and stuff yourself with Pork Pies of your choice for as long as you are there - not financially viable but on the single visit we made to the UK last year (First and will probably be the only visit since our retirement here in 2007) we tried to eat our way through the pies and the fish and chips - lol.
Best of luck with your search but if you find any - let me know please!!!!

Re: Pork Pies
No problem, sadly this year we have NO VISITORS at all so Plan D (cry a lot and dream) will come into effect. On a partial bright side I am due to have my top set of teeth removed and replaced with false ones so I will not be able to eat any sort of pie for some time - lol. Take care out there.

Re: Pork Pies
The only place I have found pork pies here have been at The Wine Gallery which were very nice and a guy used to make them for the old mill a few years back and I managed to get one from there which was also very nice, not sure if The Wine Gallery is still open as I have not seen any reports on it for quite a while.
I have 5 lots of people coming over starting from early June, can't wait

Re: Pork Pies
The Ozanköy used to have a person who made them. You had to order them and then they would tell you when to collect

Re: Pork Pies
I make proper pork pies, not to sell, but, they are the best, but a lot of effort, and good quality ingredients. So, first step, hot water crust pastry, made with lard. Various cuts of pork, belly, shoulder, bacon, minced, chopped, all of which are kindly provided by yusuf, best butcher in ozankoy, together with the lard. Once the pies are cooked.... and cooled, inject with chicken stock flavoured gelatine of course, because without the jelly it aint a proper pork pie lol. Yes a lot of effort, but blummin melton mowbray, hah, rubbish lol. There, i have given the recipe, ah yes, mace, nutmeg, salt, pepper.... have a go, you will not find better.

Re: Pork Pies
mrsgee, thanks for the list of "ingredients" and where to get the main ones. I have been looking at menu's online due to Tanky's question and my constant drooling over next years incoming supply - lol. Have found some real interesting ones for using Air Fryers and will be having a go at them later on this month. I won't be selling them either but will let you know what they come out like.
