Re: Business v greed
I suppose it depends on rent, staff, other running costs and how much capital the business has behind them.
Bums on seats is a good policy if you can take the time for your business to grow.
Luckily the punter has a choice for most things, eating out entertaining etc but still has to cover their essential living expenses. And that is the biggest problem not so much spare cash to throw around now on things that you say ok nice but nothing special.
I personally would hate to run a business with the commitments that come with it in the present financial climate.

Isnt a can a cider in the shops almost 75.tl...cant see how a business can make that work..
Looks similar to benidorm price where a pint varies from £1-£3 ..nothing unusual imo.
Same with a can of coke you can buy it in the beledysi restaurant for 50 tl my local sports bar is now 150 tl
It is what it is. Happens all over the world.

Take an electric meter reading in case you are using fans, dishwasher etc.

Techtrader, you are so right, I am under medical care and have to be covered top to toe because the UVB rays have suddenly had a disastrous effect on my skin. I have never been a SUN WORSHIPER in any way whatsoever and have always avoided the sun, but I'm suffering big time this year and I gather its going to be worse in August.

Re: Business v greed
I wouldn’t be surprised, that given how high the rents are, that the ones selling at the cheaper prices own the premises rather than rent. When you hear of the rents being charged the business is never going to cover its costs by putting 20p on the price of a drink.
Look at the average head count of customers then look at the number of staff & factor in minimum wage, then factor in rent and utility bills. It’s very hard for a business to make it stack up.
Personally I’d look more at the profiteering of the landlords rather than the bars & restaurants

Yes prices have gone up
Yes traffic has increased
Yes it's hot in the summer and cold in January and February
We first visited the island in 1987 when my father purchased a villa, in those days people did apply for permission to purchase and wait to exchange, the villa name generally changed to your name so people knew who you were. We moved out in 2004 on a career break and stayed.
Now in my retirement year I can not say I have regretted it, I had a good boss along with lovely customers who realised I loved the job and assisting them. Made good acquaintances and friends who have been there in good and bad times here and when in their home country.
What next? Golf, Pétanque, and socialising, unfortunately the last one we have to go out every night in case their weekly night out is the one we stay in
Why we came, all we did was work, running our own business gave us the opportunity to learn money doesn't come on a plate but both kept our full time jobs too, I was personally very thankful my salary arrived on the 28th of each month but all life was about was keeping our heads above water especially in a more materialistic world. Coming here was a breath of fresh air, we met people who did not judge and the night life was really good in 2004 to 2010, all full and buzzing

Its not like they brew carslberg here its just arbitarly increasing price..

A very vicious circle, I feel for people who have to show they are receiving the minimum wage to stay here now especially the ones who have made this island their home and still manage on their pension.
Crystal ball, more shops & restaurants closing.
Landlord's empty properties or tenants who can't afford the rent.
Managing the electric, water, essential food will become a lot harder

Can only agree with both Reyntj and Snd1966. The whole thing is totally unsustainable, and I just cannot understand why the govt. keep on raising the minimum wage. The knock on effects of price raises everywhere as a result, just take things back to square one, and people are no better off.

The budget deficit for first 6 months was c4.7 billion tl & thats after borrowing 17 billion tl.
You dont need to be a rocket scientist to see thats about to get worse after increasing pensions salaries etc by over 17%...
Goverment borrowing is not new...but trnc is an unrecognised country and from what i can work out is borrowing from the local banks...
I suspect the debt to gdp is not too great.nothing approaching eu uk etc..but its solely reliant on turkey for support...

The Park price is a current promo which changes regularly. It's a great place for a casual meal and drinks.
Roxy's no comment as only been in there once.
Blue Song is in the main tourist area, employs many more staff, great service and is in a fabulous location on the sea. Prices will always be higher in these situations.

Unfortunately staff, rent, utilities are there every day
People in to eat chicken may or may not come.
Attitude has to change, bums on seats thinking not how much I have to make per day/week/month on a meal if 4 people come in daily. Goal should be widened to include more people because very soon those daily 4 will not be replaced.

Re: Business v greed
Greed imo is completely the wrong word ...
Argue poor business pricing or its the price required but greed imo suggests someone is making a fortune and mostly thats simply not the case...
Desperate is more likely....nobody is getting rich here & im not sure lowering the price is the answer as there is a limited number of customers...the turkish know a thing or two about running restaurants...its probably what they do best....if they all lowered their price they are chasing the same customers..maybe cheaper prices more people would dine out but margins are then lower...its simple economics supply and demand its difficult for them...
People are just putting their head in the sand and ignoring the myriad of overheads rises..of course prices will rise...imo its not the restaurant owners to blame..do you really think they want empty restaurants ...
If you want to call.out greed check out 5 star hotel prices here 600-800 euro per night....no wonder occupancy rates are down...dont be fretting about a chicken dinner for £13....keep things in proportion...

Having lived here full time for nealy 20 years, the change has been dramatic, lots and lots of high end cars as one example both on the road and for sale. So there is the percetption that folk have money to spend on luxury cars, not true anymore..maybe cheaper prices more people would dine out but margins are then lower...its simple economics supply and demand its difficult for them...
So if its the resturants pushing up prices, and the result is fewer bums on seats , what is the solution?

Its an ever moving thing there is no solution. Just ongoing outcomes..likely less restaurants and £13 chicken dinners the days of chicken shish for a fiver are gone even though they where not that long ago. I think.most see that its not just trnc many other countries to although it may have been exacerbated here by the huge rises in salary compared to turkey for example. Trnc min wage was never double turkeys...
In jan 2020 kktc min wage was 43 % more than turkey...now its almost double...
Mind you there is an important election round the corner....

Margins are important but I don’t think many have ever got the hang of the importance of volume over here.
I don’t think they have ever been great at business but for many years it was shooting fish in a barrel so they didn’t need to be good at business to make money.
Now they do need to be better at business and a lot more creative.
The government also needs to help, pushing up the minimum wage is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Looking at rent controls will help
The new dual carriage way running through Lapta & Alsancak is also going to kill many small businesses. How many would like to pop into a shop but can’t be bothered to drive down to the next point you can do a U turn to do so?
Might only be 5 in 100 but there aren’t many businesses that can survive a 5% drop in turnover.

I think people undervestimate the business owners here whose livelehoods are on the line likely working long hours to say they dont understand pricing...try running a restaurant yourself before pointing out what appears to be the obvious...tc are entrepreneurs they all run cafes restaurants succesfully in the uk...if it was as simple as make prices low and you will fill your boots yet none of them would have cottoned on...naive perspective . Its not just restaurants barbers etc are all struggling to pay rents staff electric etc..in my opinion the restaurant business here has never been easy over the last 15 years ive seen many come and go . Some seem to think running a restaurant here was a piece of cake...i disagree it never was.

We have cab drivers who set their prices so high that they will spend the night waiting for one person willing to meet it rather than drop their prices and keep busy. Jet skis etc etc
It’s not just pricing, it’s the complete lack of imagination. We have a 1000 restaurants with 1 menu.
Restaurant owners are pretty much stuck on their pricing as they have to cover costs so I do feel for them but maybe think beyond kebabs & lamb chops?
Maybe think potatoes are quite cheap so maybe give people more than one potato with kleftico? Cheap way to make people well fed.
If a successful business opened up selling skateboards then within a few months we’d have a dozen shops selling skateboards with no thought as to how big the potential market is.
There is working hard and working smart

Why dont you open a restaurant selling potato dishes for £1 with waiters on skate boards and throw in a free taxi ride pick up drop off and report back how much money you make....
I will tell you exactly why they dont because turkish like turkish food and nothing else in general...the biggest market here is tc & turkish they dont go the chinese or indian etc like the brits . Most tourists who come here are turkish and they havent come for a vinda loo chow mein or a plate of potato give them a kumpir & ayran and they are cockahoot ...the busiest restaurant near me in iskele is ezic its full of turkish cypriots & turkish and very busy.

Quite right, I'd hate to be trying to run any kind of a business here, plus the way they tax you is ludicrous. My old landlord who was a carpenter was told many years ago his tax was based on what they assumed he will earn, based on other carpenters! He shut up shop not long after, it wasn't achievable.Reyntj wrote: ↑Tue 29 Jul 2025 7:41 pmI think people undervestimate the business owners here whose livelehoods are on the line likely working long hours to say they dont understand pricing...try running a restaurant yourself before pointing out what appears to be the obvious...tc are entrepreneurs they all run cafes restaurants succesfully in the uk...if it was as simple as make prices low and you will fill your boots yet none of them would have cottoned on...naive perspective . When we go to an Indian restaurant close to us, expats are outnumber by Turkish or TCs by about 10 to 1, and if we go to a local more costly restaurant that ratio increases.Reyntj wrote: ↑Wed 30 Jul 2025 5:05 amWhy dont you open a restaurant selling potato dishes for £1 with waiters on skate boards and throw in a free taxi ride pick up drop off and report back how much money you make....

It’s always amusing how sulky you get when someone doesn’t agree with you and start twisting their words. Why don’t you explain to me how the house edge on roulette differs depending on what you bet, I could do with a laugh.
I’ll bow to your expertise. So let me confirm that a civilisation as old as Turkey’s has a cuisine totally consisting of grilled lamb chops and kebabs, sea bass or sea bream? Because that’s all you see in 99% of the restaurants out here.Reyntj wrote: ↑Wed 30 Jul 2025 5:05 am

Is cockahoot a Turkish phrase? We have a phrase in English that means much the same, cock-a-hoop

Tbf Ezic is different in that it serves authentic Turkish cuisine. I particularly enjoy the risotto balls & teriyaki chicken. My better half swears by the spaghetti bolognaise. I always intend to try the English breakfast in there

Ets i was clearly taking the mickey out of you not twisting words...opening a restaurant with skateboards selling potatos for £1 is as daft as your supposition that you know better as always than the turkish running the restaurants an all knowing key board warrior...good day

Re: Business v greed
I mentioned Jet Skis in my earlier post because recently we had some young visitors who visited a newish beach bar/restaurant a few times. They spent a couple of days there and were keen to have a go on the jet skis but were quoted €60 for ten minutes so obviously didn’t. On the 2 days they visited, on one day the jet skis didn’t go out at all on the other one went out twice.
Now I don’t know their overheads but bar fuel, things like rent are going to be the same whether they have no customers or 100.
So let’s break down the numbers.
I guess in the summer your peak hours are going to be from 10 am to 5pm, 7 hours.
7 hours of ten minute slots.
That’s theoretically 42 slots but realistically there is going to be a time lag between customers, as you are spending most of the day half asleep, quite a time lag. Also you don’t have customers waiting so aren’t hustling, so let’s say 21 slots
If they fill those 21 slots they could theoretically earn €1260 in a day per Jet Ski
In reality the jet ski sits there unused for the whole day. If they sell 4 slots in a day I’d be amazed. So 4 slots sold, they earn €240 a day.
Not to be sniffed at but there’s a lot of wasted capacity and you have no where to go on the pricing when your overheads go up. After all you are struggling to get customers at €60.
Let’s say they did the Jet Skis for €25 for 15 minutes.
Have a 5 minute lag time (as you get busier you’ll get far more efficient turning the tables so to speak) so you can have 3 customers per hour.
Now you have €525 per day and can realistically hit that. Even if you only sell 10 slots out of the potential 21 you’ll make €250.
You now have customers who don’t feel ripped off so chances are you’ll get a lot more repeat trade. If other places keep to the €60 pricing you’ll become to go-to place for hiring a jet ski.
If overheads go up you can raise your price to say €30 or reduce the time back down to 10 minutes, you have scope to adapt.
Or you can sit there all day looking at your feet, because you can theoretically get €60 euros, after all you got it twice yesterday & your ego won’t let you accept anything less.

Re: Business v greed
Have you ever.run a business.
With all your know how you must be a serial entrepreneur multi millionaire...perhaps a business angel..maybe you should be a dragon on the den..jet skis restaurants you seem to know the lot...
Personally i dont think you have a clue about business..& costs ive.not had a jet ski or a jet ski business but they are not cheap to buy and life is 300-500 hours..thats immediately obvious to anybody with common sense..& hired jet ski will get ragged.worse than a hire car.

Just call it common sense & basic economics.
If not the teriyaki how about her recipe for spaghetti bolognaise. I’m very keen to try some authentic Turkish cuisine apart from lamb chops & kebabs.

I worked in management in most of London’s top casinos at one time. Hence why I laughed at you trying to bluff your way through casino mathematics. So I have a good understanding of marketing & hospitality
You are in property out here?

So obviously you don’t agree with my thoughts on Jet Skis?
Let’s hear where I’m wrong?

I think you mean that’s immediately obvious to someone who has had a quick google, like you did.Reyntj wrote: ↑Wed 30 Jul 2025 11:53 am

You can pick a jet ski up for five grand. 500 hours, at 3 goes an hour is potentially €37,500 at €25 euros over its life.
So basically your thinking is don’t use it and it will last ages & you won’t have to buy one as often?
Brilliant, I guess we can extend that to restaurants selling chicken. Don’t sell the chicken & you won’t have to keep buying them.

Re: Business v greed
Though I think you may have something there.
If they are only renting out a jet ski for an hour a day now maybe they can double their prices then perhaps they’ll only rent it out for half an hour a day.
Now it might be years before they need to replace it.
Wow you’ve saved them a fortune.
I’m sure there might be a flaw though

As suggested zero business acumen stick to snap and card games
£28 k -32 k in trnc for 2024 jet ski..
300 hours for a rental would be more applicable..
Your figures are nonsense
Wont matter to ets he will just ignore that and move onto another subject to argue about...
