Working this evening on tablet using NordVPN. But sometimes I can put anything relating to BBC on the TV and there is NO Sound at all, just pictures. That was the case during Wimbledon.

Accessing BBC Sounds on an iPhone generally works fine without need for a VPN.

However, live sports events are often restricted to UK based audiences due to contractual obligations. To get around this l used NordVPN NordLynx. Download from the app store. There is online guidance on how to set up the VPN.

On occasion, for sports events listening, l have had to restart my iPhone in order to clear BBC’s tracking of my current overseas location. Just be patient and prepared to shut down open apps and to restart the iPhone.

For BBC Sounds sports events listening on Android devices, these will probably work similarly with the NordVPN app available using Google.

Smart devices such as Alexa or Firestick will also need the VPN for specific sports events listening using BBC Sounds . Google “Nord VPN on Alexa” for starters and work from there.

Mine works fine without a VPN, it could be that I registered in the UK and it accepts my Username and Password?

BE READY FOR THE CHANGE
BBC Sounds does not work worldwide; it was closed for international users on July 21, 2025. However, international audiences can still access live BBC radio stations, BBC Radio 4, and BBC World Service English via BBC.com, and a limited range of podcasts are available on the BBC app and website.

I am still using BBC sounds here in NC.

To test what you mentioned above, l just deleted the BBC Sounds app and reinstalled it from the Apple App Store.

Listening to BBC Radio 5 as l type - via BBC Sounds, without active VPN l should add.

A bit of research…

Update on access to BBC Sounds outside the UK

Earlier this year, we launched a new audio service outside the UK on BBC.com and the BBC app. This includes access to BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service English, thousands of hours of podcasts (including Global News Podcast, World of Secrets and Infinite Monkey Cage) – as well as some of the best of the BBC's journalism and storytelling including news and history programming.

As part of the announcement, we said we planned to close BBC Sounds to audiences living outside the UK later this year, making it available exclusively to people in the UK. Anyone who lives in the UK will still be able to use the BBC Sounds app when they go on holiday abroad. We can now confirm that BBC Sounds closed for listeners based outside the UK on 21 July 2025.

For listeners outside the UK interested in ongoing access to the BBC radio stations following the closure, we've added a directory below that will allow for live listening to all of our BBC radio stations. This includes the BBC's music stations – BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, and Radio 3, 6Music, 1Xtra and Asian Network, Radio 4Xtra and 5Live, all the BBC's stations from the UK nations and every local radio station in England. BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service English remain available on BBC.com and the BBC app.

I brought an Internet radio from the UK, plenty of choice, not sure if they are on sale in NC?🤔

Haven't relied on the BBC fo years, far too woke and up its own nether region. BBC Sounds was out to me for a chunk today, with a message to say Go to Downloads, but then it came back.
