Another new one
Such contrasting views on TRNC life.We are looking to move over once we sell our business in Swindon. So if any of you wishing to "escape" back to the UK want a design/print/copy/courier franchise here is your chance
On a more serious note what can we expect on a day to day basis.Im not looking for ex-pat Costa Del Crime etc...
Oh ,its dull wet and chilly at the moment with the same forecast for our Bank Holiday

In my experience gave up on expecting anything here. On a daily basis the unexpected is most interesting even if sometimes frustrating.
Not sure what the Cypriot definition of logic is, but it ain't the one in my dictionary. On balance they have an awful lot going for their laid back approach to most things.
The genuine kindness, caring and respect for the more elderly is almost overwhelming. I'm hoping to spend the rest of my days here !.

Remember this is the middle east and not middle England, so do what the locals do, relax and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum Bugsey 95.
On a daily basis you can expect friendly warm hearted people, smiling faces, a welcome everywhere you go and, a totally different concept of time.
If you are told by a Cypriot, 'I will come in 1 hour', relax with a good book, and cancel any other appointments for the day. And just be glad if he actually gets there on the same day.
Expect to hear, quite frequently, Yavas yavas [slow slow] and belki yarin [maybe tomorrow].
I often hear expats complaining of things being 'not the same as in the UK', I want to say to them, that's because it's not the UK.
Don't get stressed, it will get you nowhere, they can be as stubborn as their donkeys.
Once you learn to 'go with the flow' and adapt the Cypriot attitude towards life, you will love it here.
It is a truly wonderful place and the people are lovely.

Re: Another new one
We're packing up and moving over in October, but have spent the last 7 years having holidays in Northern Cyprus and we love it. We bought a home in 2006, got our Tapu in Jan 2008 after taking possession of our property in May 2007 so for us, we are one of the lucky ones.
We still have to experience day to day life whilst living there and I'm confident it's very different from that while on holiday. The things I love about Northern Cyprus is the fact that it is laid back, a little disorganised, but most importantly it isn't the UK.
I do not understand why some people move abroad and then constantly seek to turn the place they've chosen to make home just like the one they've chosen to leave. Don't get me wrong, I understand the desire for familiarity, but not at the expense of changing your new home. Anyway, I'm sure you'll love it as long as you're the one who's prepared to adapt and not expect the locals to adapt to you. Best of luck

Well said Mozgor, too many here are trying to get all things British and change this place into Little Britain. As you say it's them that should adapt to being in Cyprus not the other way round. Hope you enjoy it when you move over.

Mozgor and Zarafet, you both seem to have the right attitude, I wish there were a few more likeminded people.
Of course there will be frustrations, I cannot count how many times, in the past, I have said to myself, I've had enough, what the hell am I doing here? but I got over it, as you both say, WE have to adapt.
Now, I couldn't be happier.
Good luck with the move Mozgor, hope it all goes smoothly and don't forget, if you need help or advice you have lots of friends on KIBKOM.

e,s I can never understand why people come here because they love it and then try to change it. bit like getting married. You love a person, place, thing because of what it is, not because of what it could be. And I do so wish that people would remember that Britain handed the place over n 1960 - along time ago. I agree wit ha former poster, I sometimes wonder why I am here, but when the sun shines and I look at the beauty of nature and the lack of cri me and silly rules and regulations, then I remember, and 'I a glad'. (just like Polyanna!)

Yes, it has made me realise too that I need to slow down and enjoy the laid back life out there. I am too hyper in the UK in that I have been conditioned to work hard and fast - this has aged me way before my time. It would be nice to try and adapt to their ways and slow down and not get worked up when someone says they will be out to you in an hour then turn up 3 days later - this is my problem with the TRNC - but if I could adapt to that, then how nice would it be for me to do the same and not upset anyone in the process. I am sure we would all live a lot longer without the stresses in life that the modern world has put upon us.

My dear old mum stayed at age 39 for years, but when I got to 40 I told her that she had to do something - either she stopped lying, or I would have to start!
