More Protests About Increased Costs at Ercan

19 organisations have joined the airlines in the protest at increased costs at Ercan including travel agents, car rental, restaurant and hotel groups etc.

Legal taxis now have to pay 40,000euros per year to use the airport, previously they paid nothing.

I urge everyone to read the following link so that you get to understand more of what is happening and then you must wonder why the government has set out to destroy Ercan and the tourist industry of TRNC -

You really do have to wonder David.

What has the airport to do with Child fares? Or am I misreading something?

Phil I despair over what is happening, it appears that the government have set out to destroy the tourist industry in one easy move, stop people using the only airport and putting all bookings through Larnaca.

Why did they have to privatize the only functioning international airport? If it was profitable then logically it was better to keep under state control, if not profitable then the only way any profit minded company would buy it would be by inducement. I think we can make our own minds up on that one.

Have said before, the RoC government and management at Larnaca must be laughing their socks off. At a time when Ercan should be promoting itself as the destination of choice, offering incentives to users and providors to the airport they are just making themselves look totally stupid and sending customers elsewhere.

I constantly despair David, at the actions, or inactions, of various TRNC governments, and I agree, it does look like a determination to self-destruct!

So, why are new hotels being built if the tourist trade is going to suffer so much?
It makes no sense?
If you actually want tourism and the money it brings the first thing you do is make sure punters can get to your country as cheaply and efficiently as possible.

Building new hotels, but then visitors either have an expensive flight to Ercan, or a hassle route from larnaca is commercial suicide, given that there are many resorts Europe wide that you can get to your hotel quickly from the local airport

I foresee even more half built concrete skeletons littering the already blemished coastline as developers pull out of projects.

You will love reading what the owner of the company now in charge of Ercan has to say - http://www.lgcnews.com/tasyapi-construc ... criticism/

This really says it all - "Mr Turanli, who throughout the press meeting was aggressive and confrontational, stressed a number of times, that his company would be looking for a return on its investment" - no mention of providing a superb facility for passengers or a cost effective terminal for the airlines!!

A personal note.
Some will think I am posting just to cause trouble, well I am. Other half and I have always used Ercan over last 7 years, except when we got caught in that other government f**k up, CTA. It is a good little airport but would be better with proper management. However what seems to have happened is the usual thing here Ercan has been sold off purely for monetary gain. If the service providors to Ercan, from airlines to cleaning services to check in to buses etc are going to take action then we must support in any way we can, other wise there will be no Ercan International and no need to worry about direct flights to UK.

The government here do not care about anything except them selves, I could say more but would probably be exported but I think the majority of members will understand.

I thought exportation was related to goods, and deportation related to people-which I am sure CIH meant.
It's easy to make a little slip when posting.

Think it is called a malapropism!!!

But then again, I maybe I did it deliberately to make sure as many people as possible read the reports and know what is going on

Nothing will change, we are stuck with these people now for the next 25 years at least. Just shows how shortsighted our RULERS are in North Cyprus. Another huge mistake the Greeks are enjoying.

There are times when I really despair. I try my damndest to defend this country, after all its our home, most of our money is is here in the form of property or bank acounts but there are times when I wonder why we do it, and perhaps family back in the UK are correct when they say, come on back, cut your losses and forget the place, it isn't worth it. Most of the time we love it here, but when I realise that we have placed our faith and our money in a load of total and utterly selfish, greedy incompetents who couldn't run an ice cream stall in a heat wave it does make us wonder.

I think a lot of expats are feeling this way. Like me they are probably stuck here as they cannot sell there property, and really need to before moving back. I have given 26 years of my life here and really loved it to stay this long, even my TC husband is so angered but as Sophie says, we despair as nothing seems to move forward, it is so frustrating. The Turkish do not need the Greeks to do anything against them they are doing it all themselves.

I have just returned from a short holiday there and tbh I was not impressed, me and the other half were thinking of coming back but not now, I saw at least 3 starving dogs on the road from Kyrenia to Supreme, one outside Supreme which I fed, the poor little thing was limping, a puppy no older than 3/4 months wandering down the bypass to Nicosia, all the horrors came flooding back. Stayed at the Dome where we were ripped off at 95 euros a night for a basic sub standard room and 9tl, for a beer and 5tl for a stewed turkish tea. Won't be back again. Had enough of the silly prices, rubbish everywhere and service that basically is dreadful, in a 3rd world country. The only thing that sh*t hole has is sunshine.
