From 'start' in the botton left of your screen select

control panel -> windows update -> change settings

from here on the important updates drop down menu select "Check for update but let me choose whether to download and install them"

You could select "never check for update" but like Microsoft themselves I do not recommend this. You do actually want these updates in general and the first option above will let you know they are there but let you also decide when you download them and when you install them.

Hope that helps
