British neighbour wielding knives

A neighbour has just threatened my son with 2 knives! He waited until I had left the house and then started hurling abusive language and threats at my son as he was entering his own home!
Really dont know what to do, completely shocked.

I feel sorry for you. It must be very uncomfortable experience, but saldy there is nothing anyone on this Forum can do. You must contact the police and share your fears. But of course, they will ask if there were witnesses. I have found the police are good at sorting out domestic matters, and it is quite different to U.K. If you can't sort it out yourselves, then suggest you speak to the police. othewrwise just hope that it was a strange incidence due to a bit of anger. Maybe you should ask your neighbour why he was being abusive to your son. Maybe he feels that soemthing was out of order.
But sadly the forum is not an 'aunty Flo' column, and you really do need to speak to people who might be able to help.
You do not say how old your son is, nor whether there has been any ill feeling before.
I am sure, also, that soner on reading this will re-iterate what has been said before - namely that if you have a problem with your neighbour, you need to sort it out with him or go to the authorities, or a lawyer.

suel5, you should go to the police before things get out of hand. Find out from you son as to whether there was any reason behind this mans actions. Like Marion states, the police are pretty good at dealing with problems of this sort.

Thank you for your support. Was feeling very anxious earlier but have calmed down now.
Yes there is bad feeling with the neighbour although we have never spoken to him, he just glares at us when he sees us? Tonight they were drunk and shouting very nasty things although they know nothing about us. Saying things like you have nothing, you are scum, we have a business? All very confusing, we dont know why they are like that and its really difficult with him living opposite us.
We are relatively new to north cyprus and unfortunately they are our only full time neighbours.
We have been and reported the incident as we dont know what will happen in the future. The incident was totally out of the blue, my son was opening the front door and we had just driven away, which they saw. The husband and wife started on my son but he said nothing and called us. Fortunately we were only a minute away, they seem to know what they were up to.
Sorry for posting about this nonsense but didnt know how to deal with it earlier, was shocked!

what a shame you have walked into a dark face of Cyprus and not its warm and hospitable one. I do hope it all sorts out, or maybe you should move (wish I could, but cannot for several reasons). we have a difficult situation here, but nothing like you. Of course, drink does alter personalities, and as you say they were drunk, maybe there is nothing more sinister than people who can't hold their liquor.
You don't say where you live, but it sounds a bit lonely and far out, or is it a holiday complex where people come only for a short while?
wish I could help more. Hope it doesn't happen again, but if it does then get straight on to the police again. good luck again. Hope you sleep well tonight and maybe in the morning it won't look as bad.

The police here are very good and usually quick to respond, I hope they came and spoke to these idiots, they sound like bullies and I am sure a few words of warning from people in authority will sort them out.

We are in Esentepe and the majority of the homes around us are holiday lets. Ironic that one of the owners left for the UK today otherwise she would of witnessed the incident.
We are not in a position to move, we are home owners but our neighbour rents his property so fingers crossed the contract may not be renewed.
The police have not called tonight, they are calling in the morning. Tonight would of been better though!

well that it sounding a bit more positive. Let's hope that your neighbours move on and that any new ones are the kind of people that you need. I do hope the police help. i am sure they will, and you have been reassured by others on this Forum that they ARE helpful.

Suel5, try not to worry, if they were drunk then they will be flat out sleeping by now if not soon. They will also regret what they have done when they wake up in the morning. It just is not on - so follow the complaint through with the police in the morning.

Shocking behaviour and I also suspect alcohol is at the route of their unacceptable display. If they rent could you not find out who the agent/landlord is and complain to them also. Perhaps a warning from either agent or landlord may result in eviction should a similar situation arise in the future?

Wasn't there some trouble a couple of months ago with drunken Brits in Esentepe. They beat up the owner of the Tumba restaurant. Lets hope something is done quickly about these thugs, hopefully deportation !!

Sue 5 - do not apologise for this posting as it is very important that you let people around you know what is happening. I am sure anyone on the forum who lives nearby would keep an eye out for anything else happening and you did the correct thing - the police are normally very good in these sort of domestic instances - also if they are Turkish or Cypriot they do have respect for the police not like those in the UK. I have not said my son is an angel.

The attack was against him whilst we were out. He has never spoken to them, looked at them or had anything to do with them.

From what they were ranting and raving on our return, it is us they have a problem with but felt my son was an easier target as he is young and was on his own.

Last night I was told by the wife that she knows people and is going to get me "laid out"?

On speaking to other neighbours, it seems we are just the next victims, they have behaved like this before.

Issue was not the son, its us so would appreciate you keeping your opinions to yourself

What you need to do is go into your kitchen and find the biggest knife possible, then give it to your son to hide somewhere, then next time he pulls out a knife your son can pull a meat clever out of the bush and do a crocodile dundee, and say that's not knife this is a knife with a grin on his face. Job done no more hassle.

Police have been round today. Neighbour has been given a final warning. Anymore incidents then he is before a judge.

They have told the police that we have 4 dogs that bark all night. Police saw we have one dog and she stays indoors at night.
He denied having arms but the police were very understanding and helpful.

What I didnt mention was that whilst in on my own the week before, friends called round and the neighbours were sat in their front garden. When my friends approached my house they were verbally abused. They were only here on holiday and have never seen our neighbours before.

It is obvious that our neighbours from hell dislike us for some reason. Not interested in their reasons but find their behaviour unacceptable.

I am so glad that you have confirmed the helpfulness of the police! If the neighbours have been warned before, then they seem to be ignoring those warnings aND IF THEY haven't been warned before, let's hope they take it to heart.
Whatever the reasons for their wishing to be abusive to you and your friends, it is no excuse for behaving in such a manner. Hope it all gets sorted or that it, or they, go away.Maybe there is a chance to find out what is REALLY bugging them so that it can be put right, but sadly, if iut is anything like my neighbours - theywon't even discuss something which they do not want to put right.
Really hope it all works out, and please don't teach your son to be as the neighbours are. tempting though it is to repay nastiness with nastiness, it is demeaning of soul to do so.

Might have known that "barking dogs" would be involved! This has become a major problem in and around Kyrenia . Both my recent holidays in Karaman were a nightmare because of this problem and previously in the Bbellapais area.I know that "locals" have very little idea about the requirements of having dogs but many "ex-pats are no better and think that barking dogs is an acceptable part of life! Same here in UK.

I do not dislike dogs but I do dislike some dog owners( in a lot of cases Brits)who have multiple dogs, keep them outside and allow them to bark day and night. Why do they keep them outside? They would not do this in the UK. Why have so many dogs? Again if they love the company of dogs why let them live where they can not be stroked and petted?
We have a house above the village of Malatya and it was the one place where I did not need ear plugs, being a very light sleeper. 2 families have now moved in, one with 3 dogs(outside of course) and one with one very yappy small dog who also lives outdoors. It will ruin things for me and my family.who loved the peace and quiet

I would never harm a dog but can understand why some people get so desperate and do cruel things.

I would never think of trying to tell a Northern Cypriot how to look after their dogs,but a Brit should be more aware of how their neighbours may feel as they should have been brought up to follow the Brit culture

Yes a neighbour in the next road has 3 dogs that do occasionally bark at night, they have disturbed us and I think the neighbour wont approach them as they are cypriot.

Barking dogs or not does not warrant 2 grown ups approaching you with weapons and screaming abuse and threats.

Hi suel5, dont let these neighbours get to you, I would be sorely tempted to retaliate to their taunts and abuse but then you are going down to their level, they are obviously sad little characters who will get their cumuppance one day, remember what goes around comes around, you will see your day with them.
